Job summary

Form Energy in Berkeley leads the Integrated Structures Mechanical Engineering team and designs the structure, enclosure, and sealing systems for our utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. You will create white-page designs that form the foundation of Gen 2 product designs and drive the transition from prototype to high-volume production.

You will lead verification analyses using FEA, establish design best practices, and recruit engineers who share a passion for excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years industry experience in mechanical design.
  • Experience leading design work for complex mechanical systems and structural design, using FEA for structural analysis.
  • Experience managing 2+ direct reports in a leadership capacity.
  • Proficiency in CAD, specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting using GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018).
  • Mass manufacturing DFMA experience with sheet metal, stampings, and weldments.
  • Self-driven, with urgency to hit tough schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Create white-page designs foundational to Gen 2 product designs.
  • Collaborate with vendors, manufacturing engineers, and operations to scale from prototype to high-volume production.
  • Drive verification analysis (FEA) and testing of the team's designs.
  • Establish best practices for structures design and mentor team members.
  • Recruit and hire engineers who share a vision for design excellence.
  • Release designs with drawings and tolerance analyses.
  • Guide the team through failure root-cause analysis on systems and components.
  • Travel up to 20% to other Form Energy offices or vendor sites.

Role Description

The Integrated Structures Mechanical Engineering team at Form is responsible for designing the structure, enclosure, and sealing systems that support and integrate all parts of our innovative utility‑scale multi‑day energy storage system. We strive to deliver designs that are optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost for high‑volume manufacturing at Form Factory.

What you’ll do
  • Create white‑page designs that will be the foundation of Form Energy’s Gen 2 product designs
  • Work with consulting companies, vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high‑volume production
  • Drive verification analysis (FEA) and testing of your team’s design work
  • Establish best practices for structures design and level‑up your team members
  • Recruit and hire engineers who share your vision for excellence in design
  • Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (drawings, tolerance analysis, etc.)
  • Guide team through failure root‑cause analysis on systems and components
  • Travel up to 20% to other Form Energy offices or vendor sites
What you’ll bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 7+ years industry experience in mechanical design
  • Experience leading design work for complex mechanical systems and structural design, using FEA for structural analysis
  • Experience managing 2 or more direct reports in a functional leadership capacity
  • Proficiency in computer‑aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting using GD/​T (ASME Y14.5‑2018)
  • Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially sheet metal, stampings, and weldments
  • Sense of urgency and self‑driven to hit difficult schedule targets
