Position Summary:The Laboratory Manager provides operational, regulatory, quality, and administrative leadership for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratory services. This role oversees daily laboratory operations, supports technical supervisors and laboratory personnel, and maintains laboratory readiness and compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, infection prevention, HIPAA, and applicable Trinity Health requirements. The Laboratory Manager partners closely with laboratory medical and administrative leadership to strengthen quality management, staffing, safety, test utilization, information systems, equipment, inventory, and operational performance while supporting accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic services.Key Responsibilities:Lead daily Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratory operations and provide guidance to technical supervisors and laboratory personnel to promote appropriate staffing, effective workflows, regulatory compliance, and timely resolution of operational or technical concerns.Maintain CLIA and CAP compliance and accreditation readiness by coordinating internal and external inspections, proficiency testing, personnel and competency documentation, regulatory rosters, third-party testing verification, policy management, and corrective actions.Develop and monitor the laboratory quality management program by establishing quality indicators, coordinating quality and control data collection, analyzing trends and problem reports, preparing laboratory-wide performance metrics, and collaborating with medical, administrative, safety, risk, and quality leaders on improvement initiatives.Manage laboratory resources by monitoring productivity, test utilization, inventory and waste, supporting budgeting and instrumentation procurement, coordinating equipment maintenance and certification activities, and identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency.Support laboratory workforce management by participating in candidate qualification review, interviewing, onboarding, primary-source verification of applicable credentials, education, performance management, employee counseling, and maintenance of accurate personnel documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.Collaborate with the Laboratory Medical Director, Administrative Laboratory Director, supervisors, providers, hospital departments, and information technology partners to optimize laboratory services, maintain effective LIS and reporting functionality, standardize policies, address safety and risk concerns, and support reliable communication of laboratory information.Licenses and Certifications Required:ASCP or equivalent.Educational Requirements:Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.Experience Requirements:Minimum of 4 to 5 years of clinical laboratory experience.Minimum 2–3 years of documented full-time experience laboratory supervisory or management experience, preferably in a hospital or large, complex clinical laboratory.Experience overseeing multiple laboratory disciplines, shifts, or functional areas strongly preferred.Special Skills or Training Requirements:Demonstrated knowledge of CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, OSHA, and other applicable laboratory regulatory and accreditation requirements.Demonstrated ability to supervise laboratory personnel, including staffing, scheduling, performance management, competency assessment, training, and employee development.Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, laboratory safety, regulatory readiness, and process improvement.Experience with laboratory information systems and integration with electronic health records.Ability to analyze operational and quality metrics, identify trends, and implement corrective actions.Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.Experience with budgeting, productivity management, supply utilization, and workforce planning preferred.Physical Requirements:The Laboratory Manager regularly moves throughout clinical laboratory and administrative areas and may alternate between prolonged computer-based work and periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, and accessing laboratory equipment or supplies. The role may require occasional lifting and movement of laboratory supplies or equipment and sufficient manual dexterity to operate computers and laboratory-related systems. Adequate vision, hearing, and verbal communication abilities are necessary to review detailed laboratory information, identify safety concerns, and communicate effectively in active clinical environments.Environmental Requirements:The Laboratory Manager works in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratory, hospital, and administrative environments where potential exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, chemicals, biological hazards, sharps, laboratory equipment, and varying noise levels may occur. The role requires adherence to applicable PPE, infection prevention, hazardous-material, OSHA, and laboratory safety practices and may involve responding to urgent operational, quality, or safety concerns. Work may also involve movement among laboratory and hospital departments and participation in inspections, safety activities, leadership meetings, and emergency preparedness activities.
