Position Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced nursing leader to join our team as the Manager of the Pediatric Emergency Department at East Valley Hospital. The manager will oversee departmental operations for approximately 55 FTEs in a 24-bed pediatric emergency unit equipped with safe rooms, treatment rooms, and a resuscitation bay. The role requires leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence in a rapidly changing environment.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Leadership: Maintain 24/7 accountability for patient care operations and support unit needs.
  • Develop and implement patient care philosophy, standards of practice, goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Assess nursing and technical personnel availability; manage recruitment, retention, and onboarding strategies.
  • Ensure high‑quality nursing care and compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulations.
  • Assume bed‑manager responsibilities in collaboration with the House Supervisor.
  • Stay current with best practice in nursing management and Phoenix Children’s policies.
  • Develop and supervise staff through timely feedback, performance development, and competency matching.
  • Recruit, interview, and select professional, technical, and supervisory staff.
  • Foster engagement, reduce turnover, and support staff satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Supervisors to identify performance issues and provide support.
  • Monitor safety reports, identify trends, and implement improvement strategies.
  • Evaluate customer and patient satisfaction and develop strategies for improvement.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Education Specialist for orientation and professional development.
  • Participate in quality reviews, event reviews, and data collection.
  • Provide timely fiscal reviews and feedback to management.
  • Collaborate with leaders to develop, approve, and monitor revenue, expenses, and capital budgets.
  • Review financial data monthly and implement strategies to ensure budget compliance.
  • Conduct ongoing productivity evaluations.
  • Provide strategic management for the department.
  • Oversee unit-based goals, support growth, and participate in program implementation.
  • Facilitate medical staff, hospital, and patient care area committees.
  • Support shared governance and a just culture.
  • Lead unit and system‑wide research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate across disciplines for coordinated high‑quality care.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as requested.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor’s in Nursing
  • Preferred: Master’s in a related field
Experience
  • Required: Five years of experience in a specialty area or with a pediatric patient population, including leadership and/or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Preferred: Three or more years of experience in an Emergency Department.
Special Skills
  • Required: Analytical and statistical skills for developing and monitoring unit budgets.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem‑solving to resolve complex clinical, systems, and personnel issues.
  • Assumes 24‑hour accountability for unit coverage.
Additional Requirements
  • Current AZ RN license or a compact state RN license with Arizona privileges (or ability to obtain such licensure before start).
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • PALS certification from the American Heart Association within one year of hire.
  • Preferred: National nursing or related certification (e.g., CPEN, CEN, CNML).
