About the Role:

We’re looking for a Manager, Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) to lead and scale a small, high-performing global team. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who thrives in both technical execution and people management. You'll lead a team of DBREs based in the U.S. and India, driving reliability, scalability, and performance across our database infrastructure.

As the team’s manager, you’ll represent DBRE at the company level—aligning priorities with senior leadership, ensuring timely execution of OKRs, and fostering a strong engineering culture built on ownership, collaboration, and innovation.

What you’ll be doing:
Technical Leadership
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable database solutions using AWS RDS (PostgreSQL/MySQL), DynamoDB, BigQuery, and other modern data platforms.
  • Drive automation initiatives with Python, Shell scripting, GitLab CI/CD, and Terraform.
  • Ensure high availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency across all DB systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to optimize schemas, queries, and overall database architecture.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response for database-related issues.
Team Management
  • Mentor, support, and technically guide a distributed team (US + India).
  • Set clear goals, prioritize work strategically, and ensure timely delivery of team objectives.
  • Represent the DBRE team in cross-functional discussions, advocating for team needs and updates.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Impact
  • Develop and implement long-term plans for improving database reliability engineering practices.
  • Contribute to a “shift-left” engineering culture by building reusable templates/modules in Backstage.
  • Champion knowledge-sharing and documentation across database operations.
What we’re looking for:
  • Bring deep technical expertise and proven leadership skills.
  • Are highly strategic, yet detail-oriented in execution.
  • Thrive in both individual contributor and mentoring roles.
  • Excel at cross-functional collaboration and building alignment with senior stakeholders.
  • Lead with empathy and foster a healthy, high-performance team culture.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 12+ years in database engineering/administration, including 2+ years managing or leading teams.
  • Strong expertise with AWS RDS (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and DynamoDB; exposure to BigQuery a plus.
  • Proven track record in performance tuning, query optimization, high availability, and security.
  • Proficiency in Python, Shell scripting, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
  • Hands-on experience with Docker/Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab).
  • Familiarity with monitoring/logging tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Managerial Qualities:
  • Ability to lead small, distributed teams while staying technically hands-on.
  • Skilled in strategic planning and OKR execution.
  • Experience advocating for team needs and influencing priorities at the leadership level.
  • Effective at coordinating across time zones and driving alignment on deliverables.
Even Better If You Have:
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and tools like BigQuery or related GCP services.
