Job summary

FirstEnergy in Akron, Ohio, is seeking a Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility to lead the company’s CSR strategy and initiatives from an ESG perspective, coordinating with internal groups and external stakeholders to deliver measurable impact.

You will oversee complex CSR projects, produce annual CSR reporting, analyze data to inform decisions, and champion internal communications while ensuring compliance with environmental and social regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Master’s preferred.
  • 10+ years of CSR experience in corporate environment.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development & Implementation: Lead the development and effective implementation of FirstEnergy’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.
  • Project Leadership & Management: Independently lead and manage complex CSR projects from conception through to execution, ensuring timely delivery and successful outcomes; manage the annual CSR Report.
  • Data Analysis & Strategic Reporting: Oversee collection, analysis, and reporting on CSR metrics to inform strategic decisions.
  • Internal Engagement & Communication Leadership: Lead internal communications and engagement efforts; develop materials for internal platforms with Communications, Investor Relations and Environmental Teams.
  • Research, Benchmarking & Innovation: Conduct advanced research on CSR trends and translate insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Process Optimization & Innovation: Identify and implement opportunities for process improvements within CSR initiatives.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure full compliance with environmental, social, and equity regulations and internal policies.

Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President, External Affairs, the Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility will lead FirstEnergy’s Corporate Responsibility strategy and initiatives, demonstrating value from an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspective to our internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
  • Strategy Development & Implementation: Lead the development and effective implementation of FirstEnergy’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.
  • Project Leadership & Management: Independently lead and manage complex CSR projects from conception through to execution, ensuring timely delivery and successful outcomes. Manage the development, management and successful completion of the annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report.
  • Data Analysis & Strategic Reporting: Oversee the collection, in-depth analysis, and strategic reporting on key CSR metrics and data, using insights to inform strategic decisions and drive continuous improvement.
  • Internal Engagement & Communication Leadership:
    • Lead and champion internal communications and engagement efforts, developing innovative strategies to raise awareness and promote CSR best practices among employees at all levels.
    • Develop and elaborate compelling communication materials, presentations, and content for various internal platforms, effectively conveying CSR messages and initiatives to employees and stakeholders in collaboration with Communications, Investor Relations, and Environmental Teams.
  • Research, Benchmarking & Innovation: Proactively conduct advanced research on emerging CSR, particularly sustainability trends, regulations, and best practices, translating insights into actionable recommendations to enhance FirstEnergy’s approach and drive innovation.
  • Process Optimization & Innovation: Independently identify, develop, and implement opportunities for significant process improvements and innovative solutions within CSR initiatives.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure and oversee full compliance with relevant environmental, social, and equity regulations and internal policies, proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in Corporate Social Responsibility, preferably within a corporate environment. Demonstrated experience in leading projects and people is essential.
  • Skills:
    • In-depth understanding and proven expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility principles, environmental issues, and social responsibility.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence, persuade, and negotiate with diverse stakeholders, and to develop highly engaging and impactful content.
    • Proven ability to independently manage complex projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and achieve strategic objectives.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, and develop innovative solutions to intricate problems.
    • Highly proactive, self‑motivated, and results‑oriented with a passion for driving continuous improvement and innovation in the CSR field.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a leader within a team environment.
