Job description

Overview

The Center for China Analysis (CCA) is part of the Asia Society Policy Institute, a think- and do- tank with a policy-solving mandate that tackles major policy challenges confronting the Asia Pacific in security and diplomacy; trade, investment, and innovation; climate and energy; and society, technology, and public health.

Established in 2022, CCA is committed to decoding China's complexities with an "inside-out" approach by offering evidence-based, independent, and policy-relevant analyses with a balanced, holistic, and human-centered focus, covering Chinese domestic politics; economy and technology; foreign policy and national security; climate, energy and the environment; society, public health, and education.

Summary

Summary

CCA seeks a skilled and strategic Communications and Engagement Manager to elevate the visibility, reach, and impact of CCA’s research and analysis on China.

This role blends strategic communications and policy fluency. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of China and international policy issues, proven experience translating research into engaging public narratives, and the judgment to navigate a politically sensitive communications environment.

The manager will serve as the key bridge between CCA’s research team and external audiences — including media, policymakers, thought leaders, and the informed public — helping shape how CCA’s “inside-out” analysis of China informs global debate.

Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & Planning

  • Help develop and implement a communications strategy to amplify CCA’s research, events, and publications across multiple channels.
  • Partner with leadership to shape messaging and positioning that reflect CCA’s “inside-out” mission to offer evidence-based, independent, and policy-relevant analysis with balanced, and policy-relevant analysis.
  • Identify opportunities to position CCA experts in media and public debates and provide guidance as needed.

Editorial & Content Development

  • Convert CCA’s research and insights into compelling, accessible content — including briefs, newsletters, and digital posts — tailored to policy, business, and thought-leadership audiences.
  • Edit and refine written outputs to ensure clarity, tone, and alignment with institutional voice.
  • Manage CCA’s newsletters (e.g., China 5, PLA Watch, internal newsletter), coordinating with authors and reviewers, editing content, and overseeing publication. Drive strategy for audience growth and new products through email marketing and creative engagement.
  • Copy-edit reports and documents as needed.

Media Relations

  • Help support ASPI's media staff with placements and monitoring as needed.
  • Manage CCA’s digital presence and outreach (website, social channels, newsletters) and develop strategy for growing audiences and engagement.
  • Coordinate internal and external communications, draft press releases, newsletter blurbs, and social media posts, and ensure smooth collaboration across teams for clear, consistent, and timely messaging.
  • Work closely with Asia Society and ASPI's communications colleagues to ensure consistency and brand coherence.
  • Develop content calendars and manage campaign rollouts tied to major reports and events.

Events & Public Engagement

  • Coordinate communications for major public events, private roundtables, and report launches, ensuring accurate messaging and broad reach.
  • Support thought-leadership initiatives.

Impact, Measurement & Evaluation

  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (media hits, social engagement, newsletter open rates) and provide regular insights and recommendations to leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Asian Studies, International Relations, or similar field
  • 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, preferably in a think tank, research institute, or policy organization.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with China’s domestic and foreign policy debates; Chinese language proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to translate complex policy research into accessible, impactful messaging for multiple audiences.
  • Exceptional English writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience developing and executing digital and media strategies; fluency with analytics tools (Google Analytics, Meltwater, Sprout, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment; ability to handle sensitive topics with discretion.
  • Highly organized self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Benefits

Hybrid work environment. Salarly: $60,000-$70,000
