Job summary

Jobot seeks a hands-on Manager of Bench Technical Services to lead a BMET/biomedical engineering team responsible for repair, testing, calibration and maintenance of medical devices. The role emphasizes leadership, quality, and customer support in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Position Overview

The Manager of Bench Technical Services will lead and supervise a team of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs), Biomedical Engineers, and Medical Device Technicians responsible for the repair, testing, calibration, maintenance, and technical support of medical devices.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused specifically on medical/biomedical equipment—not IT. The ideal candidate will come from a hospital biomedical engineering department, medical device manufacturer, clinical engineering environment, or similar technical service organization and will have several years of experience supervising BMETs or medical device technicians.

The Manager will oversee the company's largest technical team of approximately 15 technicians, while partnering closely with the Director of Technical Services on department strategy, quality, training, process improvement, and customer support.

Job Details
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Biomedical/Technical Services department, ensuring productivity, quality, turnaround times, and customer expectations are met.
  • Directly supervise, coach, train, and develop a team of approximately 15 BMETs/medical device technicians.
  • Oversee the repair, preventive maintenance, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and upgrades of medical devices and biomedical equipment.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues and support technicians with advanced troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Manage workflow, staffing, workload prioritization, and resource allocation to maximize technician productivity and service quality.
  • Ensure all technical work is completed according to established procedures, manufacturer specifications, and quality standards.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable FDA, ISO, and medical device quality requirements.
  • Oversee technician training, competency programs, certifications, and technical development.
  • Develop and coordinate technical training programs for biomedical engineers, BMETs, and medical device customers.
  • Partner with Service Administration to ensure device history records, calibration records, repair documentation, and service records are complete and audit-ready.
  • Analyze service metrics, equipment performance, customer feedback, and operational trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, service quality, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Partner with the Director of Technical Services and cross-functional teams on technical issues, new product introductions, and departmental initiatives.
  • Maintain hands-on technical proficiency by performing advanced medical device repairs, testing, calibration, hardware upgrades, and software updates when needed.
  • Support the Director with departmental planning, reporting, quality investigations, corrective actions, and strategic initiatives.
Ideal Background
  • 7+ years of progressive technical experience in the medical device, biomedical, clinical engineering, or healthcare technology industry.
  • Current or recent experience as a BMET, Biomedical Engineer, Clinical Engineer, Medical Device Technician, or Field Service Technician.
  • Several years of supervisory/management experience is required, specifically leading technical service or biomedical personnel.
  • Experience supervising field service technicians is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a hospital biomedical engineering/clinical engineering department is highly relevant.
  • Strong electrical/electronics background with the ability to troubleshoot complex medical equipment.
  • Electrosurgical equipment experience is highly relevant.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, or a related technical field is preferred; equivalent hands-on technical experience may be considered.
  • Strong understanding of medical device repair, preventive maintenance, calibration, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with FDA/ISO quality systems, technical documentation, and service records.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and technical/service software skills.
