Who We Are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, Equipment Monitoring, and Site Visibility. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role:

Telematics is Samsara’s second largest (and original) business. Our product is used by customers of all sizes and in a variety of industries throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. We help customers manage their fleet operations, with real-time tracking and data gathered from vehicles (and sensors) in the field and ingested into our cloud-based platform.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team and manage the group of Automotive Engineers who fuel the Telematics business unit. This team is responsible for expanding diagnostic coverage to ensure we get accurate, quality data, across the fleet of 10,000+ MMYs (Make Model Years) dealing with various diagnostic protocols, standards, and OEM-specific proprietary information.

We primarily work and collaborate closely with firmware engineers, product managers, customer support teams, and full-stack engineers to expand diagnostic coverage. In this role, you will be responsible for roadmap, execution, and innovation within our Vehicle Data Platform group – leveraging data from vehicle systems across Samsara’s 1.2M+ vehicle gateways in the field. Your team’s capabilities are the foundation for driving a wide range of products built on top of this data (e.g. Maintenance, Sustainable Fleet/EV Management features, etc).

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US except Alaska, Austin Metro, Boulder Metro, California, Chicago Metro, Connecticut, Dallas Metro, Denver Metro, Houston Metro, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Seattle Metro, and Washington, D.C.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: Your efforts will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, reduce emissions, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You are the architect of your own career: If you put in the work, this role won’t be your last at Samsara. We set up our employees for success and have built a culture that encourages rapid career development, countless opportunities to experiment and master your craft in a hyper growth environment.
  • You’re energized by our opportunity: The vision we have to digitize large sectors of the global economy requires your full focus and best efforts to bring forth creative, ambitious ideas for our customers.
  • You want to be with the best: At Samsara, we win together, celebrate together and support each other. You will be surrounded by a high-calibre team that will encourage you to do your best.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage a team of 4-6 Automotive Engineers working on multiple projects that expand diagnostic coverage and add customer value.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship in automotive network communication.
  • Develop best practices and guidelines for the Vehicle Gateway to operate as a third-party telematics device inside the vehicle network.
  • Work with leadership on the planning and execution of quarterly roadmaps that balance product and engineering priorities for maximum customer impact.
  • Build a healthy collaborative culture of accountability and continuous improvement while setting a high standard for execution quality.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
  • Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a diverse fast-paced customer-focused environment.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle systems and CAN communication.
  • Understands the value of team culture, communication, and collaboration.
  • 5+ years experience in a technology or automotive industry.
  • Ability to work with a geographically dispersed team.

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Automotive OEM/Supplier or Telematics provider experience.
  • Familiarity with GIT or related software development program.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering software features, leading teams, and managing engineers.
