Job summary

WGU is seeking a senior leader to guide assessment strategy and psychometrics in its online competency-based programs. You will lead a team of assessment strategists and psychometricians, defining standards and ensuring validity across programs.

You will collaborate with academic leaders to align assessments with learning outcomes and accreditation requirements, driving continuous improvement and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of assessment strategists and psychometricians, including hiring, onboarding, training, development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

  • Ensure assessments are valid, reliable, and aligned with accreditation standards and institutional goals.
  • Oversee psychometric methods: test design, calibration, equating, scaling, DIF analysis.

  • Ensure compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and professional standards for assessments.
  • Communicate findings to leadership with reports and recommendations.

Pay Range: $104,000.00 - $187,200.00

Location: This is a full-time, in-office position requiring 5 days per week in Salt Lake City, UT. Designed to foster the collaboration and connection that fuel our best work.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Lead and supervise a team of assessment strategists and psychometricians, including hiring, onboarding, training, development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Establish the vision, strategy, and goals for assessment quality, innovation, and psychometric rigor across academic programs.
  • Ensure assessments are valid, reliable, fair, and aligned with competency frameworks, accreditation standards, and institutional goals.
  • Oversee the application of psychometric methods, including test design, calibration, equating, scaling, and statistical analysis of assessment data.
  • Partner with academic and institutional leaders to define program-level and institution-wide success metrics for assessment.
  • Ensure assessment strategies, instruments, and policies comply with accreditation, regulatory, and professional standards.
  • Collaborate with curriculum, product, and faculty teams to align assessment strategies with program learning outcomes.
  • Use assessment data and psychometric evidence to identify trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and recommend improvements.
  • Provide reports, presentations, and recommendations to leadership based on assessment performance, validity studies, quality audits, and other relevant analyses.
  • Monitor project timelines, resources, and budgets to ensure deliverables are completed on time and within scope.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by leveraging research, AI, and emerging technologies to advance assessment practices.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Candidates should bring a strong understanding of:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical and strategic teams within assessment and psychometrics.
  • Strong expertise in assessment strategy, validity frameworks, and psychometric methods, including Item Response Theory (IRT), Classical Test Theory (CTT), equating, scaling, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis.
  • Ability to manage projects and teams within a complex, matrixed organization while navigating competing priorities.
  • Excellent data analysis and interpretation skills, with the ability to translate complex psychometric findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences, including senior leadership, faculty, and external partners.
  • Experience applying assessment strategies within competency-based, online, or higher education environments.
  • Ability to coach and develop team members while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards, accessibility requirements, and assessment best practices within higher education.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychometrics, Educational Measurement, Educational Psychology, Assessment, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in assessment development, psychometrics, educational measurement, learning science, learning design, or instructional design, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or team leadership role.
  • Proven track record managing both the strategic and technical aspects of assessment design, validation, and evaluation.
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience working within competency-based, online, or large-scale assessment environments.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing innovative assessment models and technologies.
  • Demonstrated success stabilizing, structuring, and advancing complex or ambiguous initiatives.
Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

This position requires occasional travel of up to 20%, including required attendance at designated company summits (typically one to two per year). Additional travel may include conferences, visits to company locations, and other business-related events as needed. Additional travel may be assigned as needed to support business requirements.
