Job summary

Katal Center seeks an Advocacy & Communications Manager to strengthen campaigns, support organizing and base-building, and oversee day-to-day communications across digital and print channels. The role includes supervising staff and coordinating with leadership for strategic messaging.

The ACM will craft content, manage media outreach, and execute audience engagement across platforms, with a focus on New York campaigns and coalition work. In-person in Brooklyn with travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of communication, organizing or advocacy experience; strategic communications and digital organizing experience a plus.
  • Superb writing and editing skills, including ability to analyze issues, think strategically, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong grasp of and comfort with digital tools and online engagement strategies for multiple platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthen Katal's campaigns and base-building efforts; manage day-to-day communications across digital and print channels.
  • Lead media planning, ensure representation in traditional media and across social channels, and produce content for website, reports, and emails.
  • Develop audience engagement strategies, including segmentation and targeted actions online and offline.
  • Supervise staff, consultants, volunteers, and interns; collaborate with advocacy/directors on legislative priorities and coalition work.
  • Support fundraising and development activities; maintain CRM and mailing lists; represent Katal at hearings and coalitions.

Job Summary

The Advocacy & Communications Manager (ACM) is a fully integrated member of Katal's organizing and management teams. The ACM is responsible for strengthening Katal's campaigns, supporting our organizing and base-building efforts, and managing the day-to-day communications about the organization's work to a variety of different audiences, across our digital platforms and print materials. This role has supervisory responsibilities.

Grassroots Communications - this includes:
  • Collaborating with the advocacy and organizing directors to manage media plans for Katal campaigns
  • Ensure Katal is represented effectively in traditional media and across socials
  • Producing written content for Katals' website, fact sheets, reports, biweekly email updates to the organization's lists, etc.
  • Monitoring news cycles and identifying opportunities for engagement and elevation of Katal's priorities
  • Drafting and pitching press advisories and releases
  • Manage the communications calendar, including emails and social media platforms
  • Coordinate the distribution of content across various platforms, including social media, websites, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Share in developing content for the website, managing vendors to make necessary changes, and posting content when necessary
  • Collaborate with advocacy and organizing director to develop and execute social media strategies across Katal's social platforms
  • Provide comms support for Katal's actions, meetings, events
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and online community connectors
  • Assist with preparing members and leaders for media interviews
  • Developing and executing audience engagement strategies, including list segmentation/customization, moving target audiences to action both online (e.g. sign petition) and offline (e.g. attend rally)
Advocacy - this includes:
  • Working with the advocacy and organizing directors to manage legislative priorities in New York City and State, including bill tracking, bill development, etc.
  • Collaborating in planning and execution of lobby days, public hearings, and coalition meetings
  • Managing relationships with partners, allies, and coalitions
  • Managing monthly statewide criminal justice reform call
  • Utilizing data from our digital platforms and list engagement to assess reach/impact and inform strategy and our organizing
  • Support the growth of Katal's membership base
Management and Administration
  • Managing consultants, staff, volunteers, fellows, and interns
  • Supporting the organization’s fundraising and development efforts
  • Sharing infrastructure/administrative responsibilities with other staff
  • Assisting in maintenance of the organization’s CRM and email lists
  • Representing Katal in hearings, public forums, coalition meetings, and conferences
Experience, Education and Skills
  • At least 5 years of communication, organizing or advocacy experience; strategic communications and digital organizing experience a plus.
  • Superb writing and editing skills, including a demonstrated ability to analyze issues, think strategically, and meet deadlines
  • Strong grasp of and comfort with digital tools
  • Demonstrated understanding of online engagement strategies and managing a variety of social media platforms
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Proven track record of understanding and effectively navigating complexities of group/coalition dynamics to produce results
  • Excellent organizational skills: creative, results and detail-oriented, excellent judgement and able to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities within deadlines.
  • Preference given to those candidates who are familiar with the political landscape in New York
Physical Factors
  • Ability to stand, walk, lift, or carry up to 10 lbs. while outdoors.
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • This position is in-person at our office in downtown Brooklyn.
  • Must attend meetings within the community and with other organizations/community partners.
  • Regular Travel required within NYC, between NYC and Albany, and throughout the state.
  • Flexible to working requirements. Some evenings and weekends required to attend events, meetings, trainings, or protests within the community.
Compensation, Schedule, Location

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The current salary for this position ranges from $68,000 to $75,000, based on experience and qualifications. Regular business hours are Monday-Friday, but schedules may vary based on priorities and activities of Katal's campaigns and will require working evenings and weekends, as needed. This position is based in our Brooklyn, NY office, and some travel may be required.
