Job summary

Duke Energy in the United States is seeking a senior accounting leader to supervise close and financial reporting processes. You will ensure accurate general ledger recording, explain variances, and coordinate with offshore teams and the E&Y partnership on complex regulatory filings.

The role requires a CPA, 8+ years of experience in accounting, and deep knowledge of GAAP and FERC guidelines. A focus on SOX controls and process improvements is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, accounting or related field required.
  • Minimum eight years of related work experience; Big 4 or equivalent public accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with rate filings (base rate, fuel, rider, deferral) and regulated utility accounting.
  • Proficiency with PeopleSoft and OneStream; familiarity with FERC reporting and COA.
  • CPA license is required; strong SOX controls knowledge and regulatory compliance.

  • Drive process improvement and ensure SOX controls are established and monitored.

Job description

  • Manage and develop a team performing accounting close and financial reporting tasks
  • Ensure business activities and transactions are properly recorded to the general ledger
  • Explain and present accounting impacts and variances to budget and prior-year results
  • Ensure internal and outsourced teams complete tasks accurately, timely, and according to policies and controls
  • Support Fuel Inventory and Settlements across the organization using Comtrac and CXL systems
  • Work closely with offshore accounting personnel from the E&Y partnership
  • Serve as the single contact for Rates, FP&A, Treasury, and other organizations on accounting matters
  • Understand relevant GAAP, FERC accounting guidance, and operational matters affecting the accounting cycle
  • Review month-end deliverables, journal entries, account reconciliations, and internal financial reports
  • Resolve accounting issues and ensure SOX controls are established and monitored
  • Prepare or review accounting conclusions and reporting documentation
  • Review SEC, FERC, and state regulatory financial reports and supporting schedules
  • Work with independent auditors on annual audited financial statements
  • Develop and coach internal staff and foster knowledge sharing with the offshore team
  • Support regulatory filings, fuel audits, and data requests
  • Lead or participate in efficiency and process improvement efforts
  • Assist with special projects involving revenue recognition and lease standards
  • Research regulatory matters and related impacts
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, or other related degree
  • Eight (8) years related work experience
  • Prior Big 4 or other public accounting experience
  • Prior experience with rate filings, including base rate, fuel, rider, and deferral request filings
  • Experience with Peoplesoft and OneStream
  • Knowledge of FIHUB Cube reporting
  • Experience preparing FERC annual and quarterly reports
  • Experience in an accounting research role and writing accounting position papers
  • CPA license
  • Knowledge of regulated utility accounting and ratemaking principles
  • Familiarity with FERC chart of accounts
  • Extensive experience with accounting systems/applications
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to pertinent business issues
  • Effective interpersonal skills; team oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Proven ability to delegate, lead a team, and develop talent
  • History of high-quality work in an accounting environment dealing with rigorous reporting and closing deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to drive process efficiency improvements
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Must live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility
  • Reliable, consistent transportation required
  • Ability to work long hours occasionally and travel periodically within the regional territory
