The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection seeks an Assistant Director for Environmental Evaluation & Remediation Review in Trenton. This executive role plans, coordinates and directs the work programs and staff of a division, guiding complex engineering, environmental and regulatory activities.

Candidates must hold a Professional Engineer license and meet experience requirements including managerial experience; alternative degrees with years of experience are acceptable.

Description
Under the direction of a higher level official in the Department of Environmental Protection, plans, coordinates and directs the work programs, activities and staff of a division and/or major element performing complex engineering, administrative/management, fiscal, environmental, or scientific activities relative to the areas of environmental management; provides executive guidance and direction, and establishes and recommends policies impacting the operations of the division; does related work as required.

Specific to Position
A working knowledge of various statutory authorities, including the Brownfield and Contaminated Site Remediation Act, the Spill Compensation and Control Act, and the Site Remediation Reform Act, as well as implementing regulations, including the Administrative Requirements for the Remediation of Contaminated Sites, Technical Requirements for Site Remediation, Remediation Standards, and Ground Water Quality Standards. Providing direction to staff on these statutes and regulations. Permitting. The Assistant Director is responsible for making sure that all inspections and reviews are conducted appropriately and that all remedial action permits are issued appropriately. Will be responsible for coordinating with the regulated community and the Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs) to resolve any conflicts, is the manager of the Rule Committee and the manager of the Training Committee. The Assistant Director is the SRP technical contact for many different committees.

Requirements
Possession of a valid Professional Engineer's license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and six (6) years of professional experience in the scientific/technical or engineering aspects of environmentally related activities, four (4) years of which shall have been in a managerial capacity.

OR

Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological, chemical, environmental, or physical sciences or engineering and six (6) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, four (4) years of which shall have been in a managerial capacity.

OR

Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological, chemical, environmental, or physical sciences or engineering and five (5) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, four (4) years of which shall have been in a managerial capacity.

OR

Possession of a doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological, chemical, environmental, or physical sciences or engineering and four (4) years of the above-mentioned professional experience which shall have been in a managerial capacity .

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession’s principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one’s own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

License
Appointees will be required to possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
