Description

Christ Health Center, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mammography Technologist to join their team of healthcare professionals. The Mammography Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality mammographic imaging procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease in a compassionate, safe, and efficient manner. This role requires adherence to regulatory guidelines, precise imaging techniques, and effective communication with patients and healthcare professionals. The technologist ensures patient comfort and safety while maintaining equipment and documentation in accordance with federal and state regulations, including MQSA and ACR standards.

Work Schedule

This is a PRN position with flexible hours based on the needs of the department.

However, the standard working hours are from 7:45 AM to 5:00 PM.

Major Duties & Responsibilities: Job Skills

  • Perform screening mammograms using digital mammography equipment, ensuring appropriate positioning, compression, and image quality
  • Prepare and educate patients for procedures, explaining the process clearly and answering any questions to reduce anxiety.
  • Position patients correctly, considering their age, condition, and specific exam requirements, and selects anatomic and technical parameters accurately.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation in the PACS system and electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure compliance with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), ACR accreditation requirements, and facility protocols.
  • Capture multiple images from different angles and perspectives to create a comprehensive view of the area of interest.
  • Ensure that images are of high quality, accurately representing the anatomy being examined.
  • Recognize and troubleshoot technical issues with equipment to maintain image integrity.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and physicians to provide them with clear and comprehensive images for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Perform daily quality control (QC) tests on equipment and report malfunctions or variances promptly.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of protective equipment and infection control practices.
  • Observes patient during procedure and reports abnormal activity. Monitors protocols and recommends updates or refinements as warranted.
  • Ensures prompt submission of high-quality of all images and documents sent to an imaging system (image quality, correct lead markers and patient data/history). Practice radiation safety and infection control procedures at all times.
  • Assist in scheduling appointments, tracking outcomes, and facilitating follow-up imaging when necessary.
  • Attends and participates in in-service education for staff, quality assurance program, and risk-management programs.
  • Each employee of Christ Health Center is vital to providing overall quality care to our patients and may be included in the patient care team and daily huddle when deemed necessary by the Core Care Team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualification, Education, Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited radiologic technologist program.
  • ARRT certification in Radiography (R) required.
  • ARRT certification in Mammography (M) required
  • Current applicable licensure and or certification/registration necessary to perform mammography
  • 2 years experience preferred
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate
  • Current CPR certification

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Requires analytical skills, attention to detail, effective organization skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to self-direct with minimal supervision.
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow precise imaging standards.
  • Proficiency with digital imaging systems, PACS, and electronic health records.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Work requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Work requires ability to carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Work requires ability to stand +/- 90% of the time.
  • Work requires ability to stoop and bend, to reach, and grab with arms and hands; manual dexterity and to communicate with others.
  • Work requires the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds.
  • Work requires proofreading and checking documents for accuracy.
  • Work requires ability to use a keyboard and visualize a computer monitor to enter and transform words or data. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • OSHA personal exposure risk category I & II
  • Airborne personal exposure risk category I (Possible exposure of the healthcare worker to patients capable of transmitting M. tuberculosis). Universal precautions will be adhered to at all times.
