Job Summary:
This position is responsible for preparing patients and performing routine mammography procedures/examinations in accordance with providers' orders, ACR and MQSA guidelines, the procedure manual, and exam protocols under the supervision of a Radiologist. The Mammography Technologist also performs bone densitometry studies. The technologist produces high-quality images and presents them with relevant comparison studies and patient information for timely interpretation by the Radiologist.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Prepares patients for mammography, confirming orders, verifying identities, and obtaining medical histories to ensure appropriate examinations and accurate diagnoses.
- Performs screening and diagnostic mammography and bone densitometry on all patient age groups, maintaining competency through annual training.
- Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, standards, and protocols to ensure quality patient care.
- Uses Computer Aided Detection technology effectively to digitize images for Radiologist review.
- Maintains a safe environment, following radiation safety principles such as time, distance, and shielding.
- Provides supervision and instruction to students, supporting the MWH School of Radiologic Technology and cross-training programs.
- Monitors inventory and supplies to prevent service interruptions.
- Records patient information and procedural data accurately for documentation and billing.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities within the department.
- Ensures follow-up reporting of mammography results to patients and providers, including additional views or procedures as needed.
- Engages in community breast cancer education and screening activities.
- Performs daily equipment quality control to ensure optimal operation and image quality.
- Participates in accreditation processes such as ACR Mammography and MSQA.
Qualifications:
- Radiologic Technologist license from the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
- BLS certification required.
- ARRT (R) registration in Radiologic Technology required; ARRT (M) preferred, with registry completion within one year if not already certified.
- Minimum six months relevant experience; mammography experience preferred or successful completion of the MWHC/MIF cross-training program. Active initial Mammography Training Course completion including DBT is preferred if no prior mammography experience.
- Bone Densitometry and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy experience preferred.
- Experience with EMR, Radiology, and information systems preferred.
