HOURLY RANGE: $37.62 - $44.02
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves maintaining and operating imaging equipment and assisting in the performance of specialized radiographic studies and scans with primary work responsibility for the conduct of mammographic procedures and bone density exams for the purpose of detecting pathology at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). This is a specialized technical position responsible for performing mammography procedures and other radiologic technical procedures. Regulates the equipment used to expose the x-ray detector. Operates equipment safely and maintains ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) standards while performing all types of procedures. Work is performed under the Director of Imaging Services, Senior Mammography Technologist or a qualified Radiologist. Supervision and instruction may be exercised over students or lower level radiologic staff. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
Communicates with Radiologist to confirm required exam details and observes protocols and evaluates images for diagnostic quality, obtaining additional images as needed;
Performs diagnostic general radiography exams including but not limited to pain management;
Sets up radiologic room for special procedures and prepares the necessary needles, guide wires, biopsy sets, contrast media, anesthetic, etc. required for the study;
Assists physicians in sterile technique;
Coordinates the scheduling of patients with transport, operating room, patient floors, outside referrals and the Radiology Department;
Prepares patients for exams and translates procedure into layman terms based on professional knowledge to relieve patient of any pre-testing anxiety;
Performs bone density densitometry exams and positions patients safely while scanning proper anatomy in correlation with patient history;
Ensures images are properly marked as right or left side and labeled with date and patient identification;
Assists in training technologists/students and assists in their transition to the work environment as assigned;
Works within the Federal Mammography Quality Standards Act guidelines;
Maintains competency in mammography and radiologic technology procedures and protocols;
Performs quality control procedures and implements corrective actions when appropriate;
Maintains required accreditations, certifications and licenses. Ensures compliance with ECMCC policy and regulatory guidelines;
Assists senior staff in activities associated with performance improvement, quality initiatives, The Joint Commission, Department of Health, FDA and Mammography Quality Standards Act accreditation;
Collaborates with department leadership to develop and implement methods to achieve established goals and objectives;
Assists others in meeting department responsibilities and goals;
Performs job duties in accordance with Corporate Compliance policy and adheres to its terms and conditions;
Demonstrates a collaborative and proactive approach in communication skills, problem solving skills and resolves conflicts as needed;
Effectively completes and ensures that all electronic data is sent to its appropriate destination;
Maintains adequate supplies in the work area with items necessary to perform the daily schedule;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the operation and maintenance of x-ray equipment; Good knowledge of anatomy, principles of physics and electricity; Good knowledge of clinical procedures, equipment and ECMCC policies, Imaging Services Department that are necessary for job performance; Good knowledge of safety protection and hazards in radiation; Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively and proactively approach communication skills, problem solving skills and resolve conflicts as needed; Ability to train and supervise work of technicians and students; Ability to prepare lectures and to instruct; Ability to compile reports; Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing within a diverse constituency; Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; Good professional judgement; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS as MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST (Job Grade Rad Scale 3):
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited school* of Radiologic Technology and possess two (2) years’ experience as a radiologic technologist, one (1) year of which included working with mammographic procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS as MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGIST/TRAINEE (Job Grade Rad Scale 2):
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology and possess one (1) year experience as a radiologic technologist, then after completion of the one (1) year training term and completion of special requirements, a trainee candidate shall be entitled to advance to permanent status as a Mammography Technologist (Job Group Rad Scale 3) without further examination.
Special Requirements For Either
Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at the time of application, appointment and throughout continued employment; and
Possession of Certification in Mammography under the Mammography Quality Standards Act at the time of permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification at time of permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
Basic Life Support Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. NOTE 2: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the full-time experience requirement.
