Job summary

WhidbeyHealth is seeking a Mammography Technologist to support quality care in Diagnostic Imaging. You will perform screening mammograms and radiographic exams, explain procedures to patients, and ensure safety and comfort throughout the exam.

Job description

The Mammography Technologist supports the mission of providing quality healthcare to the patients of WhidbeyHealth and Clinics by ensuring patient safety and comfort, facilitating the patients’ stay during the Mammography examination. The Mammography Tech provides a clear and thorough explanation of exams to patients and completes a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history, symptoms, and inquiry of prior related exams. The Mammography Tech is expected to follow all exam protocols as outlined by the radiologist and/or department protocols. This position is responsible for ensuring consent forms and questionnaires are accurately completed before being entered into MRS and maintains all records necessary to comply with hospital, federal, and state QC programs. The Mammography Tech is expected to provide timely follow up with patients as necessary and demonstrate a calm, positive approach to problem solving as well as a willingness to cross train and cover other areas within Diagnostic Imaging (DI) as required. In addition to being responsible to maintain inventory and order mammography supplies as needed, this position may be asked to perform other duties as assigned to support department functions.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS

The Mammography Tech I performs screening mammograms and X-rays in an outpatient clinic and occasionally may perform other mammography related procedures at the hospital, and principle functions include the following:

  • Technical Performance:
  • Performs various technical duties under the direction of the Diagnostic Imaging Manager or the Diagnostic Imaging Medical Director.
  • Have knowledge of radiologic equipment needed to produce high quality images for diagnosis.
  • Positions patients to obtain appropriate images for diagnostic procedures.
  • Knows and appropriately applies radiation protection, shielding, and special screening requirements for both patient and operator radiation protection.
  • Takes back-up call as assigned.
  • Transport patients to and from the department; assumes responsibility for their safety during transport.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and sanitation of the equipment and work area(s) that they are responsible for within the department and hospital.
  • Education and Training:
  • Participates in the training of new personnel; may participate in the education and training of personnel regarding new procedures and equipment.
  • In-service and Continuing Education:
  • Attends in service and continuing education programs; completes required continuing education requirements for advanced certification in Mammography and Radiologic Technologist positions.
  • Inventory Control:
  • Maintains adequate supplies in procedure rooms; stocks room daily or as needed.
  • Notifies Manager or identifies items on inventory list when supplies are needed.
  • Quality Control and Assessment:
  • Participates in Quality Control and Quality Assessment programs within the department.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduated from a JCERT accredited school or program specific to Radiologic Technology.
Training and Experience
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in Diagnostic Imaging required.
  • Candidates working in the hospital setting performing the duties outlined for the Mammography Tech II are required to have previous experience in digital mammography, stereotactic biopsy and wire localization.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • WA State DOH License as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • ARRT (R)(M) required.
  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must be able to perform various technical procedures employing ALARA guidelines necessary for radiologic diagnosis.
  • Must be able to demonstrate working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, principles of physics, and methods of exposures to obtain adequate images for diagnosis.
  • Must have the ability to setup and operate radiologic equipment.
  • Must have the ability to accomplish administrative tasks as they apply to patient flow.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written and verbal communication skills in all interactions.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work independently, carry out all tasks and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
