Description

Looking for meaningful work this summer that will help you gain marketable career skills? Interested in working a schedule that does not include nights or weekends? As a Camp Counselor with the Y, you will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, plan and problem solve, and build relationships—all while making lasting memories and having lots of fun. There are opportunities to work up to 40 hours per week and earn a bonus!

As a Day Camp Counselor, you must be able to develop, lead, and actively participate with children in various age-appropriate activities and be able to effectively monitor behavior while using appropriate discipline techniques. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, clean summer program site; ensuring a high level of program quality; and working to establish a positive relationship with all program participants and their families.

The Day Camp Counselor will serve as a positive role model to youth and teens within the philosophy of YMCA standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
  2. Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, archery, canoeing, Family Night, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
  3. Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  4. Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  5. Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  6. Know, enforce, and follow safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  7. Arrive to work on time, as scheduled.
  8. Have full availability for training by branch prior to camp.
  9. Communicate with parents about participants' experiences and report concerns to the Day Camp Director.
  10. Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  1. Have availability for day camp: Monday-Friday, June - August 7:00 am-6:00 pm.
  2. Upon hire, completion of YMCA provided First Aid/CPR certification and West Bend Insurance Online Trainings.
  3. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  4. Must have high school diploma or GED by June of current year.
  5. Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or a related field preferred.
  6. Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
  7. Ability to work as a member of a team and accomplish tasks with little supervision.
  8. Strong organizational and communication skills.
Physical Demands

Must have the ability to lead and participate in indoor and outdoor camp activities that include bending, walking, running, swimming, and regularly standing and walking for extended periods. Must be able to provide outdoor/indoor game and room setups, which may include lifting up to 30 pounds.
