These positions are located in Joshua Tree National Park, within the Facility Division.

This job announcement is open to the first 50 applicants. Applications will be accepted until either 50 applications are received or until 10/22/2024. All applications submitted by 11:59 PM (EST) on the closing date will be considered, even if the 50-applicant limit has been exceeded.

Duties

These are Career-Seasonal positions, subject to release and recall procedures. A career-seasonal position offers benefits similar to permanent employment but does not guarantee year-round work. Selected employees will be in a non-pay/non-duty (August) status for 2 weeks to 6 months annually, depending on project needs or weather conditions. They are guaranteed at least 6 months of work per year, up to a maximum of 50 weeks, with specific schedules determined upon appointment. The typical season for Joshua Tree National Park is from November to May, but this may vary due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Duties include:

  • Maintaining trails to standard by cleaning water bars, removing excess rock from the trail, brushing, cutting trail edge berms, digging dip drains, and clearing trails of trees, obstacles, and debris.
  • Laying out and constructing new trails in rocky, mountainous terrain, and restoring abandoned trails.
  • Removing windfalls, felling trees, and using tools such as block, tackle, and winches to move and place heavy objects.
  • Constructing water bars, retaining bars, causeways, dry/wet rock retaining walls, and rip-rap.
  • Assisting trail leaders in supervising crew members, and in applying trail work techniques and backcountry living ethics.
