Job summary

The City of Sequim is seeking a Maintenance Worker I to join the Public Works team. Under supervision, the worker maintains city properties and utilities, performing repairs and installations critical to streets, water, sewer and parks.

The role supports the Streets division with roads, sidewalks and drainage work. Responsibilities include operating tools and equipment, maintaining safety standards, and responding to public inquiries.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or GED) required and at least 1 year of work in general construction or building maintenance.
  • Must have Washington Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 1 year of hire and maintained for duration.
  • Requires traffic control flagger certification within 6 months of hire and CPR/First Aid within 6 months of hire.

Job Summary
The City of Sequim is seeking a skilled maintenance worker to join our Public Works team. Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, this position is responsible for maintaining City properties and utilities so they are clean, safe and suitable for use by the public. The selected candidate will perform a broad range of routine repair and installation tasks that are essential to the upkeep of all public utilities within the city, including road repair, parks, water and sewer system maintenance and general labor.
This position will be primarily assigned to the Streets division and will support the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City streets, rights-of-way, sidewalks, signage, drainage features, and related public infrastructure. Duties may include general street maintenance, vegetation control, streetscape upkeep, minor asphalt and concrete repair, traffic control support, snow and ice response, and operation of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
BASE SALARY RANGE: $27.39 - $32.66 per hour
According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, employees will start in the lower end of the salary range.
This position is eligible for longevity pay, which entitles the employee to a 2% pay increase for every five years employed at the City, to a maximum of 8% after 20+ years. Taking these numbers into account, the salary for this position could ultimately range from $27.39-$35.27 per hour, with the upper pay appropriate for an employee with 20+ years of longevity.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Although the primary assignment for this position is maintenance and repair of City streets and rights of way, the Maintenance Worker I may be assigned to different functional areas including water, sewer, parks and facilities. Depending on department assigned, work duties may include, but are not limited to, any combination of:

  • Uses a wide variety of tools and equipment to perform area cleaning, digging ditches, moving debris or dirt;
  • Monitors various equipment to determine status relative to safety standards; repairs broken or malfunctioning equipment;
  • Locates and exposes underground utilities for repair and construction;
  • Landscapes, maintains and repairs public streets and park facilities;
  • Paints traffic control lines on streets, places street signs and performs maintenance as needed;
  • Performs routine maintenance duties on pumps and other equipment within the water and sewer systems;
  • Drives city vehicles and operates a variety of heavy equipment;
  • Reads residential water meters monthly and reports data to utility division for billing;
  • Responds to questions and complaints from the public pertaining to this job function;
  • Installs sewer lines and storm drainage equipment;
  • Operates sewer television camera specialty equipment;
  • Conducts smoke testing;
  • Conducts fat, oil and grease inspections and testing;
  • Conducts industrial pre-treatment flow monitoring program and sampling;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Skill in operating and maintaining power tools and hand tools;
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance techniques;
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions; ability to assess potentially dangerous situations and request assistance as necessary;
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of heavy commercial vehicles and heavy equipment;
  • Ability to learn, obtain and maintain basic certifications in water, sewer or chemical applications;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions and work effectively as a member of a crew;
  • Ability to interact with the public in a friendly, tactful and effective manner;
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers demonstrating respect and courtesy;
  • Maintenance of good physical condition and overall stamina to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity such as standing for long periods of time, traversing rough terrain, working at heights, lifting and carrying heavy loads. Incumbent will need to climb, bend and work in tight or confined areas.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of high school diploma (or GED) plus a minimum of one year of work experience in general construction or building maintenance is required.
  • Driver’s license in good standing at time of hire with Washington State Class B Commercial Driver’s License required within one year of hire date and maintained for duration of employment.
  • A traffic control flagger certification is required within six months of hire and must be maintained for duration of employment.
  • CPR/First Aid certifications are required within six months of hire and must be maintained for duration of employment.
  • The ability to work mandatory overtime and to respond to emergency callouts within 45 minutes is required.
Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Maintenance Worker I position participates in the City’s on-call phone rotational cycle on the same basis as other Maintenance Workers and is on-call 24 hours per day.
The Maintenance Worker I must have the overall stamina and ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity, including working in/over water, at heights or on scaffolding, and to lift/carry up to 50 pounds.
Work is performed primarily outdoors, sometimes in inclement or severe weather conditions. Job requirements include a need to climb, bend, and work in tight or confined areas, and to hear alarms and audibly identify the presence of a danger or hazard.
Employees in this position may work on public roadways and be exposed to traffic hazards and open trenches.
