Job summary

MoDOT's Seymour Maintenance Facility is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform routine, entry-level duties maintaining state roadways and facilities under supervision. This CAREER-LADDER role offers advancement without competitive interviews as you learn and gain experience.

Responsibilities include patching potholes, flagging traffic, installing signs, operating equipment, and possible overtime or nighttime work. Requires a valid driver's license and a high school diploma.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED completion is required.
  • License to drive is required; tanker endorsement and CDL specifics are noted for hire.
  • Ability to operate tools and follow safety rules as part of field work.

  • Direct traffic and set up signs, cones, and traffic control devices.
  • Repair and replace road signs and guardrails; clean curbs and gutters.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment; plow snow and spread ice control materials.
  • May repair bridge decks and perform related tasks at heights or with scaffolding.

The maintenance worker performs routine, entry-level duties related to the maintenance of the state's roadways and facilities. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.   • Maintain state highway systems, including filling roadway joints and cracks and patching potholes; flag and direct traffic; set up signs, cones, arrow boards, and other traffic control devices; load, unload, spread, and haul materials and supplies; cut and clear brush; remove trash and debris from roadsides; clean and clear ditches.
  • Maintain, clean, and repair state highway facilities, including repair and replace road signs and guardrails; clean curbs and gutters; paint buildings and equipment; and service equipment and machinery.
  • Operate vehicles to transport employees, equipment, machinery and/or materials, or to warn oncoming traffic, plow snow and spread ice control materials; mow right of way using tractor mower and hand tools; operate auger, trencher, backhoe, forklift, and various trucks (e.g., dump, aerial boom, bucket, and platform).
  • Hand-mark pavement with stop bars and turn arrows.
  • Install signs, including structural and large signs at overhead positions, inspect truss signs, pour concrete sign footings, weld and cut steel sign posts, and repair and maintain break away and/or overlay signs.
  • May repair bridge decks (full and partial) and drains, and clean bridge bents/caps at heights on ladders or utilize scaffolding.
Special Working Conditions
  • Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance, including the ability to move materials by hand, operate hand tools, and perform stationary flagging.
  • Job requires outdoor work that involves exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment, including risk of physical injury from carrying out duties in heavy traffic areas, on or near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
  • Job may require overtime and nighttime work.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
  • Valid Driver's License
  • A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver's license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days after being hired into this position.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
