Job summary

Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation is seeking an experienced Maintenance Worker to perform routine upkeep, preventative repairs, and equipment maintenance for housing units and facilities. The role involves reading plans, using power tools, and coordinating with supervisors to ensure safety and quality of work.

The incumbent will attend department meetings, may be called for after-hours emergencies, and must maintain a high level of reliability and customer service while upholding safety

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of general work experience in Housing Maintenance.
  • Must have a current valid state driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with repairs and installation of doors, windows, and fixtures; measure and cut materials as directed.
  • Maintain hospital grounds: mow, prune, trim, plant, and apply herbicides where needed.
  • Mix and pour cement; shovel, finish surfaces; remove snow and apply de-icing materials.
  • Assist in electrical work: locate wiring, replace defective components, and use basic diagnostic tools.
  • Assist in plumbing: replace pipes, seals, valves, and fixtures; maintain heating and cooling systems.
  • Assist with housing inventories and maintain stock levels; ensure security of storage areas.

POSITION SUMMARY

Incumbent is issued tools, supplies, and equipment as required to perform routine duties and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures on Government & TCRHCC Quarters, mechanical equipment & utility systems associated with Housing units. Attends department meetings and may be subject to emergency callback after working hours and weekends.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

The incumbent is frequently (½ the time at work) required to perform heavy lifting weighing up to and at times beyond 75 pounds. The position does require theprolonged (3/4 of work time) ability to lift upto 50 pounds and occasionally (less than ¼ of work time) over 100 pounds. The work normal requires extensive prolonged times of standing and theability to maintain balance. This position requires frequent times walking, driving, kneeling, bending, climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching and twisting. Work is sometimes performed on ladders and/or scaffolds, which requires work overhead in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. The duties of this position require the ability to occasionally sit. This position requires the ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds continually; up to 75 pounds frequently; and over 100 pounds occasionally. May also require sitting at a desk and computer terminal occasionally. Incumbent must have the ability with hand manipulation requiring simple and firm grasping; fine manipulation; and occasional use of keyboards. This position requires the frequent sensory requirement of Far vision, near vision, color vision, depth perception, seeing in fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages over a loudspeaker, and telephone.

Mental:

The Incumbent must be able to recognize maintenance problems, determine basic repairs, and judge the proper operation of equipment/systems; then, exercise safety and precautions before proceeding with theassignment. The Incumbent must have the ability to continually concentrate and work alone. Must be able to frequently cope with high-level of stress; handle a high degree of flexibility; handle multiple priorities in stressful situations; make decisions under high pressure; cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way; manage altercations, demonstrate a high degree of patience; adapt to shift work; and work in areas that are close and crowded.

Environmental:

This position is frequently exposed to dust, fumes, gases, unprotected heights, and extremes in temperature or humidity. The Incumbent may occasionally be exposed to chemical agents. This position does have prolonged exposure to hazardous or moving equipment and loud noises.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assists with repairs and installation of doors, windows, screens, wall siding, ceramic tiles, vinyl floor tiles, ceiling tiles, shelves, refinishing cabinets, hardwood floors, etc. Measures and cuts lumber and wallboard under specific instructions; fits lumber using hand and power tools; fastens materials into place using nails, screws, fasteners, and adhesives.
  2. Maintains the hospital grounds by mowing grass, pruning, trimming, and planting trees, shrubs, and hedges. Sprays seeded areas, trees, shrubs, flowers, etc., with herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc., to control weed, disease, and insects. Hauls debris, sand, gravel, tools, supplies and other equipment using transport vehicles.
  3. Mixes or uses premixed cement for concrete repair purposes, pours and/or shovels wet cement into desired area; compacts, evens, rakes, and finishes surfaces using trowel or other hand tools. Shovels snow from steps, sidewalks and driveways of the hospital and grounds; applies salt or other ice control materials to steps and sidewalk.
  4. Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders, and insulates defective wiring such as broken and bare wiring; defective devices such as burned-out switches, damaged receptacles; defective or burned-out lamps, etc. Assist in locating broken, worn or damaged wiring in fixtures, controls and equipment through visual check or with use of multi-meter and/or ammeter.
  5. Assists in the maintenance, repair and installation of hospital or residential plumbing systems. Removes, cleans, replaces, packs, and seals defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe and leaky drains. Cuts, threads and fits pipes; replaces washers and gaskets; tightens loose connections; cuts and drills openings for pipes and/or fittings of plumbing equipment. Installs and repairs insulating materials. Makes minor replacements of various component parts of the plumbing system such as faucets, shower heads, fill valves, flush valves, etc. Sets and installs heavy component fixtures of kitchens and bathrooms.
  6. Assists with installations or repairs of hospital and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, evaporative cooling and related systems.
  7. Cleans and removes old paint and varnish from surfaces using putty knife, wire brush, sandpaper, blowtorch or chemical removers. Fills nail holes or crevices with caulk, putty, spackle, plastic wood or joint compound. Prepares surfaces by sanding, buffing, and cleaning. Masks/tapes surfaces not to be painted. Helps strip, clean and remove paint from dial and other instrument accessories by applying paint remover, washing, scraping and dipping in weak acid solution and drying.
  8. Participate in housing inventory counts and assist supervisor in maintaining correct stock levels for housing needs. Maintains tight security of store rooms and storage areas: keeps them clean at all times, stocked in an orderly and organized manner.
  9. Participates in mandatory in-service regarding Fire Safety and OSHA. Understand and adheres to established compliance, safety, and quality assurance standards.
  10. Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  11. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  12. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction.
  13. Performs duties as assigned.
