Job summary

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support the Public Health Laboratory and other facilities. You will perform routine maintenance, respond to service requests, and assist with building repairs, coordinating with supervisors and trades to meet safety standards and operational needs.

Responsibilities include minor repairs to electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, inspecting buildings for hazards, and maintaining records.

Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings.
  • At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described above plus sufficient full-time training or education to equal three years of acceptable experience; six months credited for each year of training.
  • Residency requirement: New York City residency generally required within 90 days of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, adjust, and make minor repairs of building hardware, furniture, shelving and equipment.
  • Replace broken window and door glass.
  • Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring, and walls.
  • Make minor repairs to building electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.
  • Visually inspect public buildings, structures, and equipment for defects or hazards.
  • Determine parts and materials needed for repairs and report to Supervisor.
  • Maintain pneumatic controls for heat and cooling systems.
  • Repair ejector pits and compressors and assist with autoclave repairs.
  • Attend to building emergencies as they arise.
  • Prepare reports; keep records; operate a motor vehicle as needed.
