Job summary

City of Grand Island is seeking a Maintenance Worker-PT Cemetery to perform a range of maintenance tasks at the city cemetery. The role involves operating equipment, basic carpentry, painting, and assisting with funerals. Candidates should be able to lift heavy objects, work with minimal supervision, and follow safety practices.

Position is up to 30 hours per week, primarily Monday–Friday with possible Saturday shifts. A valid driver's license is required; background check will be conducted.

Qualifications

• One to two years of experience in maintenance positions or similar work.
• Formal or informal education that ensures reading and writing ability.
• Valid driver’s license required and insurability as per City policy.

Maintenance Worker-PT Cemetery

Perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the City cemetery.

Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.

Operate maintenance equipment such as trucks and mowers for a variety of maintenance operations in the assigned area of responsibility; assist in snow removal activities.

Utilize a variety of hand and power tools; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment.

Perform routine preventive maintenance on tools and equipment as assigned.

Utilize proper safety precautions in all work performed.

Perform maintenance duties of cemetery buildings.

Perform basic carpentry work and painting for building and maintaining cemetery facilities and equipment.

Assist with opening and closing graves as necessary; assist in funeral preparations; assist public in locating graves.

Water, mow, weed, trim, sod, renovate and fertilize lawns; prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers and shrubs; trim trees.

May assist in other sections of the Department as necessary.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of

• Methods, techniques, and procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
• Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and equipment operations.
• Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
• Uses and purposes of general maintenance tools and equipment.
• Proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

Ability To

Perform tasks in a variety of operation and maintenance activities.

Perform difficult manual labor tasks including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Work effectively in the absence of close supervision.

Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and other equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.

Experience

One to two years of experience comparable to that of maintenance positions within the described work areas.

Training

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License Or Certification

Employee must possess a valid drivers license and maintain insurability as determined by the Citys insurance carrier.

Working Hours

Position will work up to 30 hours per week. The hours will be worked between Monday-Friday but may need to work on Saturdays depending on department needs.

Salary

Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
