Qualifications

Job description

This is semi-skilled work as a helper to the Building Construction and Repair Supervisor, and/or journeyman Building Maintenance Mechanic. An employee in this class performs routine semi-skilled tasks in a variety of building trades and in grounds maintenance. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of either a Maintenance Mechanic or Lead Maintenance Worker depending on the area of work. Incumbents in this class may perform routine tasks independently, with completed tasks being inspected by a supervisor.

(The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in the class. Positions may require some or all of these examples depending on the organization of work within the department. The list is not inclusive. A position may require duties not listed, if necessary, to accomplish the work of the department.)
  • Performs minor tasks in repair and renovation in the areas of carpentry, drywall, drop ceilings, floors, painting, finishing, and/or other trades under close supervision
  • Assists in the more difficult tasks in any of the building trades
  • Keeps equipment in safe and proper working order
  • Operate power tools assigned
  • Moves and transports office furniture and/or surplus items as required
  • Drives a County vehicle in carrying out assignments
  • Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    Thorough knowledge of the common practices, procedures, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building trades and in grounds maintenance
    Knowledge of the safety precautions followed in those areas
    Skill in the use of hand tools and ground tools
    Ability to use and work from a ladder and to work on roofs
    Cursory knowledge and understanding of shop drawings and blueprints
    Skill in the use of and ability to use and maintain the hand, grounds, and power tools and equipment related to a position assigned under this class
    Ability to work effectively with others; to handle all material necessary to accomplish a job assignment
    Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
    Ability to reach, grasp, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for prolonged periods of time
    Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 100 pounds
    Ability to work from drawings, sketches, specifications, work orders, and prepare simple work reports
    Ability to drive a County vehicle and/or equipment while carrying out some assignments.
EDUCATION:
Possession of a high school diploma, vocational-technical school, or GED certificate.

EXPERIENCE:
One (1) years of experience in building construction/maintenance work.

LICENSE:
A valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points. Please be advised that this position requires a valid driver's license. Your application will not be considered if you fail to include the full driver's license number on the electronic application.

CERTIFICATION:
The selected candidate must obtain and maintain a Non-CDLMedical Certification within six (6) months of the hire date.

SAFETY:
Must comply with Harford County Safety Manual and ensure compliance with applicable OSHA and MOSH regulations.
