Job Overview
Employees in this position operate motorized equipment and perform semi-skilled manual tasks in the maintenance of water and sewer lines and supporting facilities. The incumbent may occasionally act as a Lead person or operate heavy equipment if qualified, and may supervise one or two helpers. Work is performed under general supervision, with accountability for results assessed by inspection after completion.
Responsibilities
- Construct, maintain, and operate water and sewer lines, reservoirs, pump stations, and related facilities.
- Utilize a variety of field equipment, including trucks, sewer rodding machines, flusher, and other maintenance or construction equipment.
- Repair and maintain mechanical and pumping equipment.
- Repair pavements, manholes, drains, culverts, and concrete/brick structures.
- Keep accurate records and report job status.
- Follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
- Work non‑standard hours and overtime as needed to protect public health and safety.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understand and follow complex oral and written directions.
- Read and interpret blueprints.
- Operate a laptop/desktop computer.
- Analyze water samples in the field using a hand‑held chlorine analyzer.
- Operate leak detection equipment.
- Climb ladders, enter underground structures, bend, stoop, twist, and stand for long periods in inclement weather.
- Demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness.
- Adhere to safety rules for power and hand tools.
- Pass the PA‑DEP operator certification exam annually and obtain a passing score in Water Distribution System Operations (Class E) and/or Wastewater Collection Systems Operations (Class E, 4) within two years of hire.
- Obtain an operator license within the same two‑year period.
Acceptable Experience & Training
Considerable Water/Sewer Resources construction or maintenance experience at the Maintenance Worker I level, or equivalent combination of experience and education (completion of the twelfth grade). This experience must provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator’s license with Class B CDL and tanker endorsement(s).
- Ability to obtain a Class A CDL with an O endorsement (dump truck with tag trailer) within two years of acceptance.
- Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air‑brake endorsement.
- Required to have a Tanker endorsement within three months from hire date.
