Base pay range

Maintenance Worker II - Streets

Pay Range: $20.70 - $29.13

NATURE OF WORK

This is semi-skilled and skilled work in a variety of public works/streets, public lands, and building maintenance activities.

Work also involves responsibility for performing a variety of general laboring, maintenance, and construction work, including the operation of automotive equipment. An employee in this classification is expected to exercise independent judgement working within the technical area. Supervision is received from an administrative superior.

Essential Functions

The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive

  • Repairs asphalt, concrete, gravel, and dirt surfaced streets, alleys, and sidewalks; installs, repairs, and maintains drainage structures such as culverts, storm sewers, catch basins, head walls, and appurtenances.
  • Conducts pothole repair using a variety of equipment and mixtures depending on the nature of the surface.
  • Operates dump, flatbed, and other trucks in transporting personnel, materials, and supplies, assists in loading and unloading trucks; occasionally may operate heavier types of equipment including backhoes, skid-steer loaders and front-end loaders on relief or as trainee.
  • Conducts snow removal by operating sanders, snowplows and other snow removal equipment when necessary.
  • Operates mowers and tractors in cutting grass and maintaining public lands; plus operates weed-eaters on public ROW's and open ditches to cut vegetation.
  • Performs building construction work using a variety of journey level skills and tools.
  • Performs other work as directed.

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities And Skills

  • Knowledge of the type and uses of tools, materials, methods, techniques and standard equipment used in street repairs and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and precautions necessary for the application of fertilizers and other chemicals.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of dump trucks, tractors, rollers, backhoes, and similar public works equipment
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City Employees and outside contractors and citizens.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent GED; experience in construction, maintenance, or related to the area of assignment, including experience in the operation of automotive equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment.
  • Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle.
