Position Duties

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking to fill multiple Maintenance Worker II (MWII) positions.

Under general supervision by a Senior Maintenance Worker and Maintenance Supervisor, employees in MWII positions provide lead direction to small and large crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of sewers, streets, and public facilities. MWIIs are major contributors to the Department's efforts to provide exceptional service to its customers and all have important field responsibilities. Individuals in this classification may be required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

MWII responsibilities vary by section, but may include the following :

PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE : Planning work, providing lead direction to, and participating in, small and large crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of pavement in public streets and drainage systems. Additionally, MWIIs in Pavement will be expected to learn how to safely care for and operate paving and heavy equipment vehicles.

ROADWAY MARKINGS MAINTENANCE : Providing lead direction to, and participating in, a crew responsible for the maintenance of approximately 5.4 million square feet of roadway markings throughout the City. MWIIs in Roadway Markings use various types of spray paint equipment to mark limit lines, bike lanes, crosswalks, double yellow lines, and other legends, as well as remove and install reflectors.

TRAFFIC SIGN MAINTENANCE : Providing lead direction to, and participating in, a crew responsible for the maintenance, repair, and new installations of traffic control signs, street name signs, barricades, and guardrails.

TRAFFIC AND LIGHTING MAINTENANCE : Repairing streetlight outages as well as assisting the streetlight electrician and wreck crew in traffic signal repairs; Responsible for installing and maintaining traffic signals and streetlights throughout the City under supervision of an electrician.

SANITARY SEWER & STORM MAINTENANCE : Providing lead direction to, and participating in, a crew responsible for keeping the sanitary lines free of blockage, performing scheduled preventative maintenance at sanitary and storm pump stations, and working towards reducing current backlog of sewer repair projects. Keeping the sanitary lines free of blockage may require the use of high-pressure units, rodding units, and Vactor trucks. As assigned, operates a motorized street sweeper in an assigned district, including driving to assigned routes to clean streets and gutters, and remove dust and litter.

LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE : Providing lead direction to, and participating in, a crew responsible for maintaining the landscape of roadways, backups, and designated locations in the public areas throughout the City. They may participate in graffiti abatement, poster and sticker removal, enhanced debris and weed abatement, street furniture service and installation, enhanced cleaning of catch basins, illegal sign removal, sign repair, and tree and horticultural tasks.

Further, all Maintenance Worker IIs may be called upon to participate in storm and emergency response, as well as complete special projects.

These positions require grasping, reaching, bending, pulling, kneeling / crouching / squatting, lifting, and carrying objects up to 100 pounds to complete the described job duties; Standing and walking are performed intermittently.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development (GED) Test or California Proficiency Certificate)

Experience : Three (3) years experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks or public facilities, or related field.

Licenses or Certifications :

  • Possession of a valid driver's license in the State of California is required.

As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements is required.

Selected candidates will be required to submit a DMV Release of Driver Record Information form at the time of conditional offer and will be enrolled in the DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) Program. Refusal to do so will be considered withdrawing from the recruitment process.
