Job description

This position is responsible for performing trade-based work involving maintenance and repair of the City's street, water, sewer, or storm drain infrastructure. In addition, may perform leaf collection and snow and ice removal duties, including varying shift-work. Those assigned to water and sewer crews provide emergency on-call response and repairs to street, water, sewer, storm drain, and storm debris incidents. This position communicates information to a Crew Supervisor. The work contributes directly to the quality of life in the City with serious consequences on the health and well-being of its citizens and is performed under the general managerial direction of a Crew Supervisor. This work can be physically demanding at times.

Functions of all Maintenance Worker-Public Works I
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment and materials.
  • Assists in determining the locations of gas, telephone, underground electrical, television and cable, and water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
  • Responds to complaints regarding streets, storm drains, water leaks, pressure loss, no water, and sewer stoppages; evaluates situations and explains findings to supervisor.
  • May contact residents and business owners in the area where services will be affected.
  • Assists in the set-up of sediment control devices.
  • Follows and enforces recommended safety practices and uses appropriate traffic safety devices such as cones, arrow boards, and traffic warning signs. Also, assists in the installation of trench shoring devices, atmosphere tests, and other confined space entry equipment.
  • Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, dump truck, frontend loader, vacuum/flusher truck, rodder, leaf collection truck, and snow removal equipment.
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as, but not limited to, jackhammer, chipper, chain saw, and other hand tools.
  • May record a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activities, water supply, consumption, etc.
  • May act as lead person on small work details.
  • Responds to routine and after hour emergency calls, including, but not limited to, street, water, sewer, storm drain, and inclement weather events.
  • Operates power and hand tools as needed to accomplish the work.
  • May train and practice operation of vehicles and equipment which requires higher skill level.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Functions of Street Maintenance
  • Operates and prepares leaf collection and snow and ice removal equipment.
  • Uses various hand tools in asphalt and concrete repair, placement, and finishing.
Functions of Water Maintenance
  • Uses various hand tools in cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning, and flushing water mains, pipes, fire hydrants, valves, and fittings on repair and installation of mains and services.
  • Assists in replacement of defective water meters.
  • Enters confined spaces, such as valve vaults to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
Functions of Sewer Maintenance
  • Assists in inspecting and/or repairing lift/pumping stations, meters, draining systems, and sewer system to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Rods, cleans, flushes, assesses condition, and televises sewer mains.
  • Uses various hand tools in cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning, and flushing sewer mains, pipes, manholes, clean-outs, valves, and fittings on repair and installation of mains and services.
  • Enters confined spaces, such as sewer manholes to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
Functions of Storm Drain Maintenance
  • Operates and prepares leaf collection and snow and ice removal equipment.
  • Assists in forming, pouring, repairing, and finishing storm drain structures.
  • Uses various hand tools in cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning, and flushing of storm drain, pipes, manholes, inlets, and fittings.
  • Enters confined spaces, such as storm sewer manholes to perform cleaning, maintenance, and repair tasks.
Education and Experience:
High school degree and one (1) year of responsible work in labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as a part of a crew, or any substantially equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state commercial driver's license (CDL) with required endorsements. (Maintenance Workers and Traffic Maintenance Works (regardless of level) are required to have a CDL Class A License with the Tanker (N) endorsement).
  • Knowledge of general duties, tools, equipment operation, and practices required in operation and maintenance of City infrastructure and appurtenances including street, water, sewer, and storm drain operations.
  • General knowledge of occupational hazards, safe workplace practices, and safety precautions for the proper execution and usage of a variety of equipment and power tools.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to handle and operate light and heavy hand tools and power equipment.
  • Ability to independently perform manual tasks.
  • Ability to determine electrical, mechanical, and plumbing malfunctions and to make minor repairs on such equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, snow removal, storm debris clean-up, and other emergency response at times other than regularly scheduled work hours.
