Maintenance Worker I - (Storm Water Maintenance)

Job Summary
The Maintenance Worker I - Utilities position involves routine tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of the infrastructure of the City's Stormwater, water, and sewer systems. The work requires regular contacts with Public Works employees, other City employees, contractors, and the public. Physical demands are significant, involving heavyweight materials, equipment, and machinery. Working conditions can be harsh due to exposure to dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration, moisture, confined spaces, or climbing structures like water towers. Work is directed and reviewed by supervisors, and shifts, standby duty, and overtime may be required.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform labor involved in construction and maintenance projects, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying pipe, and backfilling.
  • Maintain equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after use.
  • Drive trucks of various sizes for loading, hauling, and unloading materials.
  • Inspect and repair lift/pumping stations, reservoirs, meters, drainage, and sewer systems.
  • Maintain water storage tanks, fences, and clean yards as needed.
  • Determine the locations of utility lines before excavation.
  • Respond to water-related complaints, evaluate situations, and inform supervisors.
  • Cut, fit, lay, repair, tap, clean, and flush water mains, pipes, valves, and fittings.
  • Replace defective meters and assist in setting up sediment control devices.
  • Follow safety practices and use traffic safety devices.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment, including backhoes, loaders, trucks, and hand tools.
  • Assist with sewer main rodding, cleaning, flushing, televising, and property cleanup after sewer backups.
  • Perform emergency repairs, snow removal, and other duties as required.
Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate appropriate training, experience, and licenses, including a high school diploma or equivalent, experience in construction and maintenance labor, and a valid state CDL with endorsements (Class A with Tanker endorsement required for Maintenance Workers and Traffic Maintenance Workers).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of utility maintenance tools, equipment, and practices.
  • Understanding of safety precautions and hazard awareness.
  • Ability to follow instructions, operate tools and equipment, and perform laborer duties independently.
  • Ability to identify and repair electrical, mechanical, and plumbing issues.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, and organize work efficiently.
