Maintenance Worker I - Parks and Facilities
This position involves performing routine tasks related to the care and maintenance of City of Rockville parks, playgrounds, facilities, storm water systems, and rights-of-way. The work requires regular contact with maintenance staff, other City employees, contractors, and the public. Incumbents work independently and are supervised generally. The role requires working various shifts and overtime as needed.
Responsibilities include:
- Cleans and maintains parks, playgrounds, facilities, and rights-of-way; performs landscaping activities.
- Maintains and repairs parks, rights-of-way, and storm water systems, including snow and leaf removal.
- Operates equipment such as mowers, line trimmers, blowers, and other maintenance tools.
- Applies pesticides and herbicides using spray equipment.
- Inspects and repairs playground equipment.
- Handles chemicals and fertilizers; waters, fertilizes, and cultivates plant life.
- Removes trash and disposes of waste around facilities.
- Operates heavy machinery like backhoes, skid loaders, tractors, and mini excavators.
- Moves supplies and equipment; climbs ladders to complete tasks.
- Clears snow, ice, leaves, and debris from various outdoor areas.
- Maintains equipment and tools after use.
- Drives trucks for hauling and loading activities.
- Operates powered hand tools and specialized equipment.
- Addresses resident and business complaints related to maintenance services.
- Follows safety protocols and uses traffic safety devices.
- Reports damage and performs emergency repairs, including storm clean-up.
- Communicates with residents regarding scheduled work.
- Performs minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical, and construction tasks.
- Performs general outdoor cleaning and landscaping, including installing amenities and power washing surfaces.
- Assists other staff and performs additional duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; or three years of responsible maintenance experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Special Qualifications
- Valid state driver’s license required.
- Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) learners permit within 6 months and a full CDL (Class A or B) within 12 months of hire. Existing CDL holders with proficiency may be hired above entry level.
