Salary Range:Maintenance Worker I: 26R - $23.49 - $28.56 hourly, $4,071 - $4,950 monthly
Maintenance Worker II: 30R -$25.94 - $31.51 hourly, $4,496 - $5,461 monthly


The vacancies can be filled at either Level I or Level II based on experience:

  • Maintenance Worker I: Entry-level position. Performs less complex tasks and routine duties.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Journey-level position. Skilled position for a full range of maintenance and repair tasks. Requires advancement from Level I or prior public experience in assigned division and a commercial driver’s license.

As a Maintenance Worker, you should be capable of:

  • Operating various tools and equipment to complete tasks
  • Performing basic repairs and routine maintenance
  • Keeping public areas clean, safe, and secure
  • Training or guiding crew members on equipment and safety
  • Troubleshooting issues and identifying necessary repair materials
  • Maintaining accurate records and preparing simple reports
  • Addressing public inquiries and complaints professionally
  • Working flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Responding to emergency situations when needed
  • Participating in on-call shifts (Maintenance Worker II level)

Some of the essential duties you may be responsible for:

Parks and Landscape Assignment

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect and operate a range of tools and equipment such as large power mowers, tractors, rototillers, power hedge and edge trimmers, blowers used in park maintenance.
  • Conduct weed abatement of City-owned open space areas, landscaped areas at City facilities, green belts, median islands, equestrian fencing and trail grading.
  • Perform routine maintenance duties such as refueling, changing oil, and lubricating parts of equipment.
  • Trim and prune bushes, vegetation, trees and shrubs; stake trees as necessary; rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, tennis courts and other facilities.
  • Install, inspect, repair and remove playground equipment, picnic tables, barbeques and other related parks equipment and facilities.
  • Provide support to City events; gather supplies; maintain and refurbish event equipment and loading truck with debris.
  • Perform various duties in the maintenance and repair of the City’s irrigation system, including changing and adjusting heads, assisting in large irrigation system installations, and irrigation controller programming.
  • Install erosion control measures including sandbagging as needed.
  • Maintain park restrooms, stock with necessary supplies, repair toilets, urinals and faucets as needed.
  • Operate spray equipment and apply herbicides in the control of plant pests and diseases.
  • Remove graffiti from City property using a variety of methods and tools including sandblasting, chemically cleaning and painting.
  • Conduct field inspections to ensure the safety of public facilities.

Street Maintenance Assignment

Essential Functions:

  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment such as rollers, dump trucks, skip loaders, jackhammers, air compressors, paint stripers, and tractors.
  • Break up, repair, mix, form, and finish concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and ramps.
  • Remove, replace, and repair hazards in streets, such as potholes and cracks.
  • Load, transport, and unload stone, gravel, asphalt, slurry materials, dirt, and other materials.
  • Place traffic control and warning signs; serve as a flag person to control traffic; set up cones, barricades, and other safety zone methods as needed.
  • Trim trees using hand-powered tools.
  • Clear storm drains, catch basins, and culverts.
  • Maintain and install street and traffic signs.
  • Construct and repair manholes.
  • Paint parking stalls, crosswalks, curbs, street lines, and street markings.

Water Meter Customer Service Assignment

Essential Functions:

  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of the water distribution system and non-potable water system including main line repair; service line installation, replacement and repair; main line valve installation, replacement and repair; water main line flushing; pipe cutting; line tapping; water meter installation, replacement, repair and testing; and hydrant valve turning and flushing.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, jackhammers, pavement saws, compressors, pneumatic tools, hand tools and power tools.
  • Cut, break and remove street and sidewalk surfaces; repair sidewalks, curbs, gutters and streets; dig, shovel, haul, load and unload materials; roll and iron asphalt as necessary.
  • Perform leak detection and correlation duties as necessary.
  • Locate utilities, mainlines and services; mark location of underground water lines.
  • Assist in coordinating system shutdowns for contract work including monitoring system pressure.
  • Assist in creating and implementing traffic control plans; conduct traffic control when working in high traffic areas of the City; install street barricades and cones; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Works in trenches and confined spaces.
  • Perform a variety of duties associated with water customer service including radio meter reads; connect and disconnect water services; repair meter related leaks; replace meter lids and box as needed; manually re-read meters in response to customer requests, complaints and inquiries. Required Certificationfor Water Meter Customer Service:Grade I Water Distribution Certificate issued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

  • Eligible for Annual Boot Allowance of $312 dollars. The allowance will be pro-rated on a monthly basis for employees hired after July 31.
  • Commercial Driver's License Pay- $50.00 month as a Maintenance Worker II
  • Eligible to join the Chino Hills City Employees Association (CHCEA).
  • Eligible for On-Call and Call-Back pay (depending on assignment needs).
  • Certification Pay: If assigned to Water Meter Customer Service employeemay qualify for additional compensation based on the maintenance of specific certification,
    • For instance, if assigned to Meter Customers you may be eligible for additional compensation for maintaining Water Distribution Operator and Water Treatment Certificate(s) issued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board.
    • Certification Pay shall be an additional 2% of hourly base pay for levels 1 and 2 and 3% of hourly base pay for levels 3 and 4.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Maintenance Worker I:One (1) year of experience including installation, maintenance and/or repair in the area of the assigned division.

Maintenance Worker II:Two (2) years experience including installation, maintenance and/or repair in the area of the assigned division.

LICENSE:


Maintenance Worker I: Must possess a California Class 'C' Driver’s License throughout employment.
Maintenance Worker II: Must possess a California Class 'A' or 'B' Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements throughout employment.


**Eligible for $50 monthly allowance for employees with a valid Commercial Driver's License in Maintenance Worker II classification. **


Highly desired candidates will have two years' experience or more along with Class 'A' or 'B' Driver's License.



CERTIFICATION:


Water Meter Customer Service Assignment: A Maintenance Worker I/II must possess a minimum of aGrade I Water Distribution Operator Certificateissued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board.

*A copy of your certificate(s) must be uploaded at the time of application (If your certificate is not submitted and a requirement of the position, your application may be rejected).*

If the position is filled by promotion or internal transfer, the employee must acquire the required certification(s) within 12 months.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Maintenance Worker I/II:Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade

Classification is flexibly staffed. If hired as a Maintenance Worker I, applicant must complete the one-year probationary period and obtain a valid California Class 'A' or 'B' Commercial Driver's License for promotion to a Maintenance Worker II position.

If a current employee who has held active status is selected, it will be considered a promotional appointment, and they will be required to serve a 13-pay period probationary period (approximately six months).
