The City of Kinston seeks a Maintenance Worker to perform manual tasks in the construction and maintenance of public facilities. The role involves operating various machinery and requires good physical stamina, along with basic reading and writing skills. Applicants should possess a valid driver’s license and some experience in maintenance work.
Performs intermediate manual and basic semiskilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities, buildings, grounds, streets, utilities, and related facilities. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the assigned Crew Supervisor.
Responsibilities include:
Requires some knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas, and related construction, maintenance, and repair procedures. Must have knowledge of safe operation and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment, skill in using such equipment, and the ability to understand and follow oral instructions. The role demands manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Basic reading and writing skills are necessary, along with the ability to establish effective working relationships.
Minimum qualifications: Less than high school education and minimal experience in construction, maintenance, custodial, or grounds-keeping work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special requirements: Possession of a valid driver's license in North Carolina. Ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license valid in North Carolina. The work may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force, standing, walking, handling objects, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, speaking, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and repetitive motions. Requires good depth and color perception, visual inspection skills, and the ability to operate machinery and vehicles. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, chemicals, and other hazards is possible, with the need for appropriate protective equipment.
