ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of City parks, recreational areas, public grounds, sidewalks, medians, street signs and markings, and streets. Duties include unskilled to semiskilled maintenance and repair work, as well as operating light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment. Work may be performed independently or as part of a crew, often outdoors and requiring physical labor.

ABOUT THE DIVISIONS

Parks & Recreation - Parks DivisionThe Parks Division is looking for dedicated and motivated individuals to join our team as we care for and maintain over 52.5 acres of stunning City Parks, including 12 picturesque parks and 42 acres of scenic landscape boulevards. With approximately 12,000 trees adorning our City streets, our staff plays a crucial role in preserving the greenery that defines our community. As part of our team, you'll be responsible for maintaining city-owned pathways, tending to 38 easements and small landscape islands, and ensuring the overall well-being of our parks and green spaces. Public Works - Streets DivisionThe Public Works Street Division performs a wide variety of tasks including street repair, concrete work, sidewalk remove/replace, carpentry, street lighting, traffic marking/signage, storm water system maintenance, installation of benches, book drop boxes and art. Under general supervision, must be able to perform heavy physical labor in the elements. This position provides the opportunity to work in a friendly team environment, while learning and practicing valuable skills and knowledge in the Public Works field.

Maintenance Worker I:$71,189.63 - $86,531.44 Annually

This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II (MWII) by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of discretion and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as required of the MWII level. Must be able to perform heavy physical labor.

Maintenance Worker II:$78,489.73 - $95,404.76 Annually
This is the full journey-level class within the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from MWI by the assignment of a full range of duties. Employees at the MWII level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

The City may hire employees into the MW I or the MW II classification.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Inspect city owned buildings, park grounds, structures, medians, and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.
  2. Clean and clear park grounds and structures of debris and hazardous conditions; maintain city facilities; prepare indoor and outdoor facilities and streets for special events.
  3. Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and plants; clear sites of weeds.
  4. Assist in the maintenance, construction, and repair of parks, and city facilities as necessary.
  5. Operates trucks. Cleans and performs minor repairs on assigned equipment.
  6. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
  7. Perform general painting, plumbing, and carpentry work as needed.
  8. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  9. Perform duties related to pesticide control.
  10. Lift and moves heavy objects.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Maintenance Worker I

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in construction or maintenance work

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record

Maintenance Worker II

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years of experience in construction or maintenance work.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess and maintain a Class B California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record

FLEXIBLE STAFFING

A MWI who has passed probation and worked for the City for two continuous years in the MWI position with satisfactory annual performance evaluations may move to the MWII class – regardless of openings in the classification – if the employee obtains a Class B California Driver’s License and at least one of the following:

  • Qualified Applicator Certification
  • CWEA Grade 1
  • Maintenance Superintendents Association – Public Works Technician

A MWI that moves to the MWII classification will be placed at Step A of the MWII salary schedule or the MWII step immediately above their current MWI salary step, whichever is greater.

After being elevated to the MWII classification, the employee will be in probationary status. After completion of probation, an employee must maintain the certification that served as the prerequisite to moving to the MWII classification, and must satisfy all other requirements of the MWII classification.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Uses and purposes of various hand tools employed in basic laboring; safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and heavy equipment; the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy equipment. Ability to perform the specific division duties as outlined below.

Streets:

  • Basic knowledge of street maintenance duties such as concrete and asphalt repair, sweeping, painting, crack sealing, signing and storm water system inspection and cleaning.
  • Ability to perform general manual labor duties related to street maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe use of streets related tools and machinery.

Parks:

  • Knowledge of sweeping, trash pick-up, trash removal and hauling, leaf removal, pruning, tree trimming, and other routine park maintenance work.
  • Ability to perform general manual labor duties related to landscape maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of parks related tools and machinery.

SKILL AND ABILITY TO:

Perform routine maintenance activities related to park or facility maintenance; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work with the variety of tools related to maintenance; learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment; and perform heavy manual labor; work indoors or outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing maintenance activities, the Maintenance Worker I/II is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; lift and/or move 80 lbs. Heavy physical indoor or outdoor work is required during the course of a normal maintenance work day. Work in inclement weather is also required. Work on holidays, weekends, and nights may be required.
