Job summary

City of DeLand is seeking a Maintenance Worker I to perform semi-skilled tasks under supervision, operate hand tools and light equipment, and work in varied weather conditions. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position in the Parks & Recreation department.

This role requires a valid Florida driver's license. Experience with irrigation and grounds maintenance is preferred, and duties include mowing, edging, landscaping, and related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Irrigation and irrigation-related grounds maintenance experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Performs yard and field maintenance such as cutting grass, edging, weeding, laying sod, spreading grass seed and fertilizing.

MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Department: 143/Parks & Recreation Exempt: No

Reports To: Foreman Hourly Wage: $16.75

Position Type: Full-Time Hours: 40 hrs/week

Job Summary: This position performs a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks under direct supervision of a foreman, lead worker, or other higher-level classified employees. Duties may involve the use of hand and power tools and the operation of light truck and construction equipment as a part of the assignment. Duties may be performed under adverse weather or working conditions.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs yard and field maintenance such as cutting grass, edging, weeding, laying sod, spreading grass seed and fertilizing.
  • Other duties include: spraying for insects, landscaping, sports field maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Irrigation and tree trim/grounds cleanup experience is desired.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.
  • Ability to use various hand and power tools related to the job.
  • Good physical condition is essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in water and may handle chemicals.
