Job summary

Sertoma Star Services is seeking a Maintenance Worker I to support facilities, grounds, equipment, and agency vehicles in the South Chicagoland area. You will ensure compliance with codes, OSHA standards, and agency policies while performing preventive maintenance and repairs.

The role requires basic trades skills, a valid license, and strong organizational abilities. Join a team dedicated to safe, high-quality service across vocational, educational, therapeutic, and residential programs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two years of college, technical education, or completion of a skilled-trades program preferred.
• At least two years of relevant facilities or maintenance experience preferred.
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and measuring devices.
• Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, and preventative maintenance.
• Strong judgment, organization, and time-management skills.
• Valid driver’s license and insurance; CDL a plus.
• On-call availability and ability to respond after hours.

Responsibilities

• Performing preventative maintenance and routine building inspections.
• Maintaining detailed records of inspections, repairs, and work performed.
• Repairing or replacing electrical devices and plumbing fixtures.
• Carpentry, painting, and general building repairs.
• Troubleshooting plumbing and sewer concerns.
• Handling maintenance tickets via computer or mobile app.
• Operating an agency truck for pickups, deliveries, and projects.
• Snow removal and seasonal grounds maintenance.
• Responding to emergencies during nights/weekends/holidays.
• Participating in on-call rotation and backup for Maintenance Manager.

Your Role

As a Maintenance Worker I, you will help maintain Sertoma Star facilities, grounds, equipment, and agency vehicles. All work must be completed in accordance with local building codes, OSHA regulations, agency policies, and applicable safety standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Performing preventative maintenance and routine building inspections.
• Maintaining accurate and detailed records of inspections, repairs, and completed work.
• Repairing or replacing electrical devices and plumbing fixtures.
• Performing general carpentry, painting, and miscellaneous building repairs.
• Troubleshooting plumbing and sewer-related concerns.
• Reviewing and responding to assigned maintenance e-tickets using a computer or mobile application.
• Operating an agency truck for pickups, deliveries, and special projects.
• Moving office and residential furniture as needed.
• Completing snow removal, light landscaping, and seasonal grounds maintenance.
• Responding to emergency maintenance or security concerns, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Participating in the department’s on-call rotation.
• Serving as a backup to the Maintenance Manager when needed.
• Maintaining a clean and safe workplace by following safety procedures and proper material-handling practices.
• Using required personal protective equipment and reporting unsafe conditions.
• Completing all agency-mandated training within the required timeframes.
• Maintaining compliance with applicable licensing, funding, accreditation, and state and federal requirements.
• Performing additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two years of college, technical education, or completion of a recognized skilled-trades training program preferred.
• At least two years of relevant facilities, building, property, or general maintenance experience preferred.
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and measuring devices.
• Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, and preventative maintenance.
• Ability to use practical mathematics and accurately document completed work.
• Strong judgment, organization, and time-management skills.
• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple assignments.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and mobile applications.
• Valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
• Ability to participate in an on-call schedule and respond to emergencies outside regular business hours.
