Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is seeking a Maintenance Worker I to perform general custodial and repair work around the Center’s facilities. This full-time role requires Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 am–6:30 pm, with a 40-hour workweek.

Responsibilities include cleaning, maintenance across craft areas (HVAC cleaning, plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry), event setup, and ensuring security of buildings.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a laborer.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining facilities.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with clean record.
  • Reliable transportation to the center.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use handheld power tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to withstand outdoor conditions.

Responsibilities

Purpose

As a member of the Facilities Team, perform general and specialized custodial and repair work in and around the Wildflower Center’s buildings, grounds, and other facilities. This full‑time position requires a Tuesday‑through‑Saturday schedule (10:00 am‑6:30 pm).

Responsibilities
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and remove trash throughout the facility, including outdoor areas such as picnic areas, patios, and water stations. Keep closets organized, stocked, and clean.
  • Comply with all safety policies and report unsafe activities to supervisors and the Safety Committee.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks in one or more craft areas independently or with others, including HVAC cleaning, plumbing repairs, electrical maintenance, painting, and carpentry.
  • Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other equipment for Wildflower Center or private events on site. Support special events outside normal hours.
  • Secure buildings and rooms on schedule and after cleaning, lock and unlock campus gates, and follow alarm procedures.
  • Interact with visitors, volunteers, and staff professionally and courteously. Operate a golf cart to complete duties in remote areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience as a laborer.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining facilities.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Dependable transportation to and from the Wildflower Center.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use handheld power tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to withstand outdoor conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • More than the required experience as a laborer.
  • Two years of custodial and maintenance experience in a garden, museum, or event setting.
  • Experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
Driving Required

This role requires a class “C” driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three‑year driving record. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a resident. Employees required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing as required.

Salary Range

$41,600

Working Conditions
  • Must be willing and able to work outside in all weather.
  • May be exposed to hazardous wildlife, horticultural chemicals, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift, push, and pull fifty pounds are required.
  • Works independently and unsupervised on a regular basis.
Work Shift
  • Five days, 8‑hour work days: Tuesday‑through‑Saturday, 10:00 am‑6:30 pm.
  • Occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required for mission‑related events.
