Job summary

San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is seeking an experienced maintenance technician to perform repairs, preventive maintenance, and overhauls of hospital‑owned equipment, fixtures, and utilities. You will respond to trouble calls, coordinate safety procedures, and help keep core systems running under normal and emergency conditions.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, relevant trade experience (HVAC, electrical, refrigeration), and the ability to work on on‑call rotations

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; 3 years related experience preferred, with at least 1 year in a healthcare environment.
  • Preference for 3 years experience in HVAC, refrigeration, or electrical; related certification preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to hospital trouble calls and perform repairs on hospital equipment and non‑medical systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on non‑medical equipment, HVAC, and air‑handling units.
  • Restart and shut down chillers and boilers; coordinate safety procedures.
  • Complete general building repairs including carpentry, ceilings, and floors as needed.
  • Repair medical gas outlets and replace interior lighting; maintain safe systems.
  • Comply with hospital policies and participate in on‑call rotation.

Job description

General Statement of Duties
  • Responsible for repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance of hospital‑owned equipment, fixtures, fittings, furnishings, and utilities distribution.
  • Must work under normal day‑to‑day conditions as well as under emergency conditions that require all equipment to function as normal. May perform other duties of a special nature as directed.
Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to all trouble calls in the hospital.
  • Perform repairs on non‑medical equipment (dietary, environmental service equipment, beds, plumbing, lighting, HVAC).
  • Perform preventive maintenance on non‑medical equipment such as air‑handling units, dish machines, and exhaust fans.
  • Restart and shut down chillers and boilers.
  • Implement and coordinate fire drills; member of the hospital fire response team.
  • Document regulatory requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission, Texas Department of Health and Human Services).
Additional Job Functions
  • Make general building repairs, including carpentry, ceiling and floor repairs, and furniture.
  • Perform paint and patch work.
  • Minor electrical repair to portable non‑medical equipment.
  • Repair medical gas outlets in patient rooms.
  • Replace building interior lighting as needed and reset circuit breakers.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • Understand and commit to helping the hospital and its associated facilities achieve its goals.
  • Enforce system, departmental, and hospital policies and procedures, as well as established rules and regulations.
  • Learn and comply with corporate and facility safety policies; use appropriate safety equipment; report unsafe conditions; check procedures with supervisors.
  • Comply with the hospital’s code of conduct and model ethical behavior.
  • Support the mission and vision of the hospital and demonstrate excellent customer service.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Job‑Related Characteristics
  • Expert‑level knowledge of building maintenance practices and skills with common tools and equipment.
  • Ability to build productive customer relationships and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Active participation in team efforts to achieve goals.
  • Safety awareness—understanding conditions that affect employee safety.
Qualifications

Minimum education: High school diploma or GED. Training and experience: preferred 3 years in a related job or equivalent training and on‑the‑job training, with at least 1 year in a healthcare environment. Prefer at least 3 years experience and a high level of knowledge in a specific trade (HVAC, refrigeration, or electrical). Certification in a related field preferred. Complete competencies as defined by department/unit and/or clinical specialty area. Good verbal and written skills are essential.
