Job summary

Erie County Medical Center Corporation seeks a maintenance supervisor to oversee minor supervision and participate in the general maintenance and repair of county buildings and sewer systems. You will work under a supervisor, plan daily tasks, and ensure adherence to safety standards while coordinating with a small team of maintenance staff.

The ideal candidate has experience in building or sewer maintenance, a high school diploma or GED, and strong English reading/writing skills.

Qualifications

• Completion of elementary school and two years of building or sewer maintenance or related experience.
• Six years of building or sewer maintenance or related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (A) and (B).
• Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and participates in maintaining county buildings, equipment, grounds or a sewer system and appurtenances.
• Plans and schedules maintenance work including painting, replacement of non-working equipment, and servicing plumbing and heating equipment.
• Instructs workers, issues supplies and inspects work.
• Performs sewer district maintenance tasks such as digging, laying and repairing sewers and sludge beds.

DISTINQUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing minor supervision and participating in the general maintenance and repair of County buildings or County sewer systems and appurtenances. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking employee who makes work assignments and receives reports for conformance with standards. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of maintenance employees. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Supervises and participates in the general work of maintaining and repairing County buildings, equipment, grounds or a sanitary sewer and its appurtenances;
• Participates in general repair work by laying out and scheduling work such as painting, replacement of non-working equipment, repair of furnishings, servicing plumbing and heating equipment, waxing floors, servicing lavatories and moving equipment, supplies or furnishings;
• Instructs workers, issues supplies and inspects work;
• Performs maintenance duties in a sewer district such as hand digging, laying and repairing of sewers, equipment and sludge beds, etc.;
• Complies with various Occupational Safety & Health Administration laws and regulations, including reading and understanding Material Safety Data sheets relating to hazardous materials and other substances;
• Assists in the operation of hydraulic flusher and/or rodding machine, T.V. and grouting equipment and drives vehicles required to perform sewer district maintenance work;
• Performs work related to the operation of closed circuit telespection and internal grouting systems.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of sewers, plumbing, carpentry, electrical repairs, building cleaning procedures and/or related supplies and equipment that pertain to the actual position responsibilities and duties; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of building services; ability to read, write and understand the English language; ability to prepare simple reports and maintain records; ability to follow routing oral and written instructions; industry and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of elementary school and one of the following, either:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of building or sewer maintenance or repair, mechanical, general maintenance, or related experience; or
• Six (6) years of building or sewer maintenance or repair, mechanical, general maintenance, or related experience; or
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as define by the limits of (A) and (B).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to read, write and understand the English language.
• Possession of a New York State Class III Operator's License required for the Sewerage Division-Department of Environment & Planning.
