Job summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge in Wapello, Iowa.

The role covers a range of intermediate construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance tasks across facilities and equipment, with emphasis on safety and compliance with federal standards. Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to pass a background investigation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a CDL.

Job description

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge in Wapello, Iowa. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of intermediate construction, rehabilitation and maintenance work. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Major Duties
  • Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Completing repairs to building and facility electrical systems such as lighting and power fixtures, wiring, fire or water alarm systems, and emergency power systems. Performing the maintenance, repair and/or operation of machinery and heavy equipment. Operating various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process. Applying standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding, and scaffolds. Performing plumbing tasks to various buildings and structures.
Requirements

Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. You will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period -OR- 2-year trial period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest. This probationary or trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary or trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Physical Demands: Considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. Frequently required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. Uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places.

Working Conditions: Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common.

Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items.

Work is generally done on stable flat terrain and construction sites, but may be also done on rolling hills, minor slopes, grades, rocky or soft ground, or forests.

How You Will Be Evaluated: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level.
