Physical Demands: The incumbent must be able to operate and control floor maintenance machines, move and control heavy equipment and carry, set up and work from ladders. Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladders or scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, as well as to operate maintenance and cleaning equipment/machines and remove cans/containers of trash.
Continual standing, bending, stooping and reaching is required; along with lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Vehicles used for duty are operated in all kinds of weather and traffic in a safe and efficient manner. Will be required to work with a large variety of cleaning agents, herbicides/pesticides and landscaping tools/equipment. Using normal safety practices, only minor risk of injury is expected.
Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside. Indoor work is usually performed in offices, laboratories, common public spaces, warehouses or outdoor facilities with adequate lighting, heat and ventilation. Some duties will require outside work in inclement weather. The work involves exposure to strong cleaning solutions, high noise and vibration levels, dust, dirt, grease, extremely hot and humid or cold weather and disagreeable odors. Work may require occasional exposure to harmful biological, chemical and physical agents.
Protective devices such as gloves, goggles, facemask, or respirators and immunizations may be required. The incumbent is subject to injury such as splinters, falls, skin irritations, abrasions and bruising when working from ladders and scaffolds and while working with strong cleaning solutions and/or equipment/machines. Must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment to avoid injury and possible hazards in the work area.
Work conditions require sitting, frequent walking and standing, driving a vehicle and mowers, bending and carrying items ranging from light weight to moderately heavy (50 lbs) weights. The health status of personnel may be monitored periodically using physical examinations as required.
