Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR) is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support the Facilities department. The role covers a range of trades with increasing independence as training progresses, enabling you to perform repairs and routine maintenance on buildings and fixtures.

The position requires multi-trade capability, strong safety awareness, and the ability to manage priorities in a dynamic environment across bases within CNRMA/CNIC enterprises.

Job description

Summary

This position is located in the Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Fleet and Family Readiness Support Services Office, Facilities department. The purpose of this position is to assist with facilities maintenance work. The incumbent performs intermediate level tasks and works more independently as training and experience increase.

Duties

The incumbent is responsible for a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks involved standard methods related to the operation and maintenance of facilities.

Performing work in at least two of the following trades requiring a higher level of skill than the NA-4749-07 in the maintenance and repair of buildings and related fixtures or having significant emphasis in one of the higher-level licensed trades: Electrical, Heating, Ventilation and Colling or Plumbing. Maintains logs as required.

Plumbing

Makes basic plumbing repairs to sinks, faucets, commodes, tanks, urinals, P-traps, shut-off valves, cleaning, resealing, and replacing defective parts or units, installing water heaters, garbage disposals, faucets and sinks. Performs routine maintenance on washer/dryers. Incumbent refers more complex problems to the supervisor.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Recognizes the cause of faulty equipment and assists making repairs on a variety of HVAC units.

Electrical

Recognizes and reports electrical problems. Replaces fluorescent and incandescent ballast, blubs and tubes. Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures and poorly operating thermostats.

Carpentry

Measures, cuts and constructs or repairs wood or wood substitute items. Conducts basic carpentry repairs such as repairing or replacing screens, window and doorframes, molding and trim, and repair and replacement of drywall or similar products. Applies general knowledge of wood, composite materials, wood substitutes, and woodworking techniques, as well as basic mathematics to plan, measure and lay out materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications. Incumbent applies standard measurements and specifications when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding and scaffolds.

Painting

Preparation of areas and standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying to ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected and free from drips or runs. Incumbent uses specifications to thin, stir and mix coating materials according to specific directions. They apply various coating materials (paints, varnishes or shellacs) with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods or techniques ensuring that the coating finish meets surface protection requirements.

May assist with set-up/breakdown of events or special projects.

Observes required safety, sanitation and hazardous waste disposal rules and regulations. May operate a vehicle to transport tools and materials to work site.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Must pass all applicable records and background check.

  • This position may be subject to an irregular tour, which could include weekends, holidays and special work.
  • Employee is required to have, or obtain within 6 months after job appointment, the required state and Federal government licenses and certifications needed to perform the job requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. This position requires travel to other bases within the CNRMA region or CNIC enterprise.
  • Travel could be up to 50% of the time depending on projects and workload.
  • Must be able to lift 45 pounds (100 pounds assisted).
  • Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA Installations. (review required documents section for more information.)
Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess:

NA-07 level

This is a career-ladder, developmental position where the incumbent may be promoted non-competitively to the full-performance level and target grade of Maintenance Worker, NA-4749-08, Position Description (PD) MA20-11. Non-competitive promotion may occur upon meeting the following requirements: (a) satisfactory demonstration of ability to perform at the higher grade level, (b) assignment of increased responsibilities, (c) recommendation for promotion by supervisor, and (d) satisfactory completion of any required training, licenses, and developmental assignments

NA-08 level

Minimum two years working experience that demonstrates knowledge in two areas (Carpentry, Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical or Painting). Knowledge in the applicable combination of trades sufficient to perform the duties of the position.

Must have skill in the safe use of a variety of basic hand tools, portable power tools and use of small construction equipment (scaffolding, tractors, trucks, etc.).

Knowledge of safety and environmental rules and regulations concerning procedures, tools, mechanical and electrified equipment, commonly used chemicals and basic safe work practices.

Must have the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond quickly and effectively to changing program needs and regulations.

Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written skills to be able to evaluate and provide reports on work in progress.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.
