Job Summary

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of school facilities. Responsibilities include performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning classrooms, restrooms, and common areas, repairing and maintaining equipment and systems, addressing facility-related issues promptly, and assisting with setting up for events and activities. Additionally, they may collaborate with other staff members to prioritize maintenance needs, maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, and adhere to safety protocols and regulations. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team to uphold a conducive learning environment for students and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain preventive maintenance on heating and cooling systems required by the MAXIMO system.
  • Perform general maintenance on equipment, sewer lines, distribution system, drainage, painting of buildings and rooms; replace floor tiles; perform minor electrical repairs on appliances; repair drinking fountains, windows, doors/hardware; perform minor repairs on roof, swamp coolers, exhaust fans.
  • Perform PM schedule on all school equipment, fire alarm system, utility lines, playgrounds, etc.
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g., broken/clogged pipes, drains, faucets, gutters, sprinkler heads, grease traps, fixtures) to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Perform general carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding.
  • Maintain shop area and work sites in a safe, clean, and orderly environment; adhere to safety according to established laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Assist other departments as required for student safety and supporting programmatic activities (e.g., inclement weather transport, emergency transport, graduation, security, annual song and dance festival).
  • Inspect facilities, systems, and components to identify necessary repairs.
  • Comply with OSHA requirements and standards; report any safety deficiencies to Supervisor.
  • Exercise safe handling and application of hazardous chemicals or substances according to Standard Operating Procedures (HAZCOM/AHERA).
  • Assist in implementing emergency planning and response; serve as a Volunteer Firefighter for local Fire Department if required.
  • Assist security as a backup in patrolling buildings, play area, and school campus if asked.
  • Work evenings, days, weekends, and/or call backs as required.
  • Establish, maintain, and support positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, departments, outside agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Utilize various communication channels, including social media, to enhance connectivity and engagement, fostering stronger connections and facilitating effective collaboration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Effort

Climbing ladders, scaffolding, and working in hard-to-reach places; standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling when making repairs. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Must be able to wear respiratory equipment in confined work areas and may have to wear rubberized protective clothing.

Working Conditions

Works inside and outside, subject to all types of conditions from high temperature to unheated dark, dusty crawl spaces and noisy, dirty, and smelly areas. Occasionally required to work outside in bad weather. May be exposed to broken bones, electric shock, danger of boiler burst, carbon monoxide poisoning, scalds, and gas or sulfur fumes. Cuts, bruises, etc. may result from accidents while working around equipment and machinery. Handles toxic or corrosive chemicals used to treat or maintain mechanical equipment.

Requirements
  • Support and comply with the Rock Point Community School philosophy, mission, and vision statement.
  • Completion of 4 hours Prevention of Sexual Harassment training annually.
  • Completion of 2 hours SCAN procedures and reporting annually.
  • Maintain confidentiality and proper storage of files according to FERPA.
Qualifications
  • High school education or equivalency.
  • Actively pursuing AA degree in Construction Technology/Building Maintenance and/or equivalent training and/or certifications.
  • At least 3 years work experience in facility maintenance.
  • 3 years continuous employment with previous employer.
  • Knowledge in inventory of material and buildings.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs or more with safety precautions.
  • MAXIMO training and familiarity with ordering process.
  • Certification in AHERA/Asbestos.
  • Hazardous Waste Health and Safety Training certification.
  • Certification in water treatment, distribution, and protection; familiar with Navajo Nation Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Ability to perform intense labor work.
  • Conduct duties in accordance with RPCS Policy and Procedures and other reporting policies and procedures of the tribe, state, and federal government.
  • Minimal knowledge of Dine language, culture, history, traditions, and its people for compliance in all aspects of educational programs.
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certification and basic safety training.
  • Valid government issued driver’s license or identification card.
  • Federal, Arizona, and Navajo Nation background clearance.
