Job summary

Church of St. Mary Magdalene in San Diego is seeking a part-time Maintenance Worker responsible for upkeep of church facilities, offices, parish hall, convent, and surrounding grounds.

You will perform cleaning, basic repairs, and routine maintenance to ensure safety and longevity of all spaces. The role requires ability to work outdoors in variable weather, pass a background check, and hold a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Maintain all campus facilities and outdoor areas, including cleaning and repairs.
• Inspect electrical, plumbing, and drywall issues and escalate to outside vendors when needed.
• Open/close and clean conference rooms, parish hall, kitchen and bathrooms for meetings.
• Set up and clean parish events and coordinate with parish office.
• Wax parish hall floors annually.
• Routinely inspect campus to identify corrective and preventative actions.
• Provide assistance to pastor and business manager for liturgy and parish needs.

Pay: $ 23.00 per hour

Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker provides adequate maintenance and preventative maintenance on all equipment, buildings, and grounds to ensure safety to all persons, including staff and visitors, and to extend the life and appearance of these items.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain all campus facilities and outdoor areas (church, parish offices, parish hall, conference rooms, convent, rectory) including cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash, etc.
• Work on repairs/maintenance to all campus facilities, equipment, and outdoor areas.
• Clean and maintain parking areas, sidewalks, and walkways.
• Restock supplies in all restrooms (paper products, soap).
• Maintain various supplies throughout the property and provide input for the restocking of supply materials when needed.
• Check/maintain any electrical, plumbing, and/or drywall issues prior to calling an outside vendor.
• Open, close, and clean conference rooms, parish hall, parish kitchen, and bathrooms for meetings.
• Set‑up/clean‑up parish events. Work with parish office and the parish calendar.
• Wax parish hall floors annually.
• Routinely inspect campus to identify corrective and preventative actions.
• Creates and prioritizes work and improvement lists.
• Provide assistance to the pastor and business manager as needed for liturgy and parish needs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must pass a background check.
• Must successfully complete Safe Environment Curriculum and CA Anti‑Harassment Training.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must have a High School Diploma/GED.
• Must have the ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions.

Knowledge and Skills

• Must have a strong working knowledge of repair methods, materials, tools, and general practices used in maintenance such as but not limited to carpentry, electrical work, cement work, plumbing, sanitation, locksmith, janitorial care.
• Must have knowledge of procedures, practices, tools, and equipment used in maintenance.
• Must have knowledge and use of power equipment and hand tools to complete some tasks.
• Prior electrical/plumbing/maintenance/custodial experience helpful.
• Must be able to be self‑sufficient and perform outlined tasks with little or no supervision.
• Must be able to read, speak, and understand English proficiently.
• Must have the ability to work with other staff members.
• Must be able to make judgment calls related to emergency and safety matters.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be mobile to, from, and within the parish facility, as well as maneuver throughout the facility to clean and maintain the property, including climbing ladders. The employee must be able to perform moderate to heavy manual labor, including frequent bending, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
