The PRCR Department plays a leading role in the quality of life and character of the Capital City. With nearly 10,000 acres of land, 220 parks, and 120 miles of greenway trails, the Department provides a wide range of facilities, amenities, and programs that support the social, cultural, mental, and physical well-being of citizens. The Department is guided by a comprehensive 20-year System Plan that identifies the overall vision of Bringing People to Parks and Parks to People. The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates who align with the City's values, is team-oriented, and a leader with passion and vision for parks and serving the community.

ThisMaintenance Worker position will focus on providing exceptional experiences for our park patrons throughout Destination Parks. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated with passion and vision for parks management. This position will be expected to conduct all aspects of high-level grounds maintenance.

The primary role for this position to serve and assist within the Turf and Grounds crews of Destination Parks. Destination Parks is composed of four parks, including: Dix Park, Pullen Park, John Chavis Memorial Park, and the Raleigh Rose Garden.

Dix Parkis a fun and fast paced environment in one of the newest parks in the City of Raleigh Parks system. Dix Park consists of 308 acres and is currently in the developmental phase. Dix Park consists of the Greg Poole, Jr. All Faiths Chapel, the Flower Cottage, and the Stone Houses and Historic Entry that serve as a rental event space and as the host to a variety of community events and programs throughout the year. The Gipson Play Plaza, that is tentatively scheduled to open in 2025, will be an inviting and inspiring public space for all ages with one-of-a-kind play spaces, works of art, a civic plaza, fountains, and gardens.

Pullen Park, the first public park in North Carolina established in 1887, is the 5th oldest operating amusement park in the United States. Sitting on more than 66 rolling acres Pullen Park is comprised of several historic and popular destination sites.

John Chavis Memorial Park, located in the heart of downtown, consists of a new central plaza with an integrated water feature, renovated former carousel house, and a large playground for variety of ages and abilities. The existing park amenities also include a historic Herschell carousel, baseball field, outdoor walking track with multipurpose field and 3 picnic shelters.

TheRaleigh Rose Gardenboasts over 1200 roses and 60 varieties with hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, miniatures, and antiques. It is a popular site for weddings and shares the property with the Raleigh Little Theatre and outdoor amphitheater.

Work Hours: The typical schedule for this position is Monday - Friday; 7:00 am – 3:30 pm with occasional rotating weekend shift work.

  • Perform unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance in support of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department; select proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; perform work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
  • Monitor basic grounds repair and/or maintenance needs; perform unskilled or semiskilled preventative maintenance, cleaning and/or repairs; remove and haul debris and/or refuse; maintain grounds and landscape
  • Inspect and maintain tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment; identify and document required repairs
  • Respond to customer requests and address issues or maintenance needs.
  • Maintain activity logs, records, work orders and related reports
  • Provide upkeep of facility grounds by mowing, weed-eating, bush-hogging and spotting for certified spray technicians
  • Assist with irrigation maintenance and repairs pruning, mulching, aerating and over seeding; assist with irrigation repairs
  • Painting and replacing boards, signs and benches
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Knowledge of:

  • Parks Maintenance to include mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, and litter / leaf removal
  • Preventative equipment maintenance, including replacing worn or damaged parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery
  • Performing repair work and preventative maintenance on and installation of tables, benches, fences, signs, etc
  • Safe general work practices to include appropriate PPE use and situational awareness

Skill in:

  • Safely operating and maintaining machinery, including push, stand on and zero-turn mowers, tractor and implements, string trimmers, edgers, backpack blowers, and other mechanical landscape tools used in grounds maintenance
  • Assisting crew in safely applying pesticides, bed preparation, landscape installations, and removal of invasive plants
  • Assisting crew in installing watering plants and pruning trees and shrubs
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to appropriately and positively interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the public

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
