About the Department

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City Agencies and non-profit organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduce street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing, all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.

DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities with a large team and a multi-billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

Facilities & Logistics Division (F&L)

The F&L division provides maintenance and repair services to city-owned facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts, and purchasing operations. Its contract portfolio oversees approximately $200+ million dedicated to building maintenance, focusing on preventive and general maintenance to prevent premature failure of building systems.

Position Overview

The Department of Homeless Services is recruiting for one (1) Maintenance Worker. The responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting in routine maintenance, operation, and repair of public buildings and structures, including their equipment.
  2. Conducting visual inspections of building equipment and conditions; performing related work, such as driving to work sites.
  3. Maintaining, adjusting, and making minor repairs to building hardware, furniture, shelving, and equipment.
  4. Replacing broken window and door glass.
  5. Repairing windows and sashes.
  6. Making minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring, and walls.
  7. Making minor repairs to electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.
  8. Assisting in relocating building equipment as directed.

Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson, or helper in electrical, mechanical, or building construction/maintenance trades; or
  2. At least two years of full-time experience as described above plus sufficient full-time training or education in related trades, with six months of experience credited for each year of training or education.
