Maintenance Trades Specialist II, Structured Cabling Technician

The Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems, including copper and fiber optic cabling, supporting various network infrastructure components. This role requires a strong understanding of industry standards, safety procedures, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Will become Systimax certified.


Major Responsibilities:
  1. Install, terminate, and test copper (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, etc.) and fiber optic (single-mode, multi-mode) cables.
  2. Install and mount cable support systems (e.g., racks, trays, J-hooks, conduit).
  3. Dress and route cables neatly and according to industry standards.
  4. Install and terminate patch panels, keystone jacks, and other connectivity hardware.
  5. Perform cable testing and certification using appropriate equipment (e.g., Fluke).
  6. Label cables and equipment clearly and accurately.
  7. Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve cabling issues, including connectivity problems and signal loss. Perform preventative maintenance on cabling systems. Troubleshoot network connectivity issues related to cabling infrastructure. Identify and repair or replace faulty cables and connectors.
  8. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of cable installations, including as-built drawings and test results. Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions. Update network diagrams and documentation as needed.
  9. Safety: Adhere to all Advocate and industry safety standards and procedures. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required:
  • Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of technical training.
  • Valid Driver’s License
Education Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
Experience Required:
  • 2-4 Years of Experience in relatable industrial/trades maintenance or operations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures.
  • Intermediate level computer skills in using systems such as CMMS, Microsoft Office, Building Automation Systems.
  • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight with intermediate level technical skills in facility maintenance.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:
  • Works required shifts and participates in on-call duty to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. from floor to overhead, lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to chest-level, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 50 lbs. of force.
  • Exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards and therefore knowledge of safety precautions.
  • Position requires travel. May be exposed to road/weather hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
