Job Description: Grounds Maintenance Worker

The City of Hickory is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Worker to perform various outdoor maintenance tasks in municipal parks, cemeteries, and public grounds. This role involves strenuous manual labor, often in inclement weather, and requires knowledge of grounds and plant care, as well as operation of small equipment.

Responsibilities

1. Trim hedges, remove flowers, and pick up debris.
2. Plant trees, shrubs, and flowers; water and fertilize as needed.
3. Seed, fertilize grass, and add lime as necessary.
4. Operate mowers, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, stump grinders, bucket trucks, bobcats, dump trucks, and street sweepers.
5. Spread mulch, mow grass, weed-eat, and trim curbs.
6. Perform leaf removal, assist with sports field maintenance, snow removal, parks maintenance, janitorial duties, and cemetery maintenance.
7. Maintain irrigation systems and perform minor equipment repairs.
8. Provide after-hours support during emergencies and special events.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Valid North Carolina Class "C" driver's license.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge of lawn and landscape care.
• Ability to operate small motorized equipment.
• Ability to perform physical labor in various weather conditions.

Additional Requirements

• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Possession or ability to obtain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• Meeting the City’s criteria for an acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting over 100 pounds, climbing, and other physical activities. Work is primarily outdoors, exposed to weather, noise, and machinery. Safety protocols and protective equipment are mandatory.
