Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to perform preventive maintenance and repairs across hospital facilities in Worcester. The role involves electrical, plumbing, heating and mechanical tasks, with a focus on keeping equipment and systems running safely and efficiently.

The position is non-exempt, with an evening shift (3PM-11PM), 40 hours per week, and a potential signing bonus.

Qualifications

• Reading, writing and math skills required.
• Basic plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical repair knowledge.
• Experience with maintenance work orders and CMMS.
• One to three years of experience; trade school preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and repair of medical facility equipment and systems.
• Replace light bulbs; assist with fire alarm system shutdowns, generator tests, and major repairs.
• Fabricate minor repair parts and components.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, plumbing and electrical issues and respond accordingly.
• May perform sheet metal cutting, welding and soldering.

Performs various general maintenance work including plumbing, heating, carpentry, electrical, etc., necessary to maintain equipment and systems and related duties throughout all UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMHC) Campuses. Works following general instruction such as routine work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, etc.

Major Responsibilities

• 1. Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots, and repairs various equipment and systems such as, but not limited to, medical gas systems, medical air pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, alarm panels, valves, gauges, water purification systems, refrigeration systems, fire alarm systems, pneumatic tube system, laundry equipment, beds, stretchers, sterilizers, surgical instruments, kitchen appliances, etc.
• 2. Replaces light bulbs and related items. Assists with fire alarm system shut down, generator and electric testing as directed. Assists with major repairs and installation of equipment and systems.
• 3. Fabricates minor repair parts and components as required.
• 4. Troubleshoots, evaluates and identifies problems with mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems and responds appropriately.
• 5. May perform sheet metal cutting, welding, and soldering duties.

Position Qualifications

Ability to read, write, calculate and follow instructions and procedures. Knowledge of basic plumbing, heating, electrical, and mechanical techniques and repair principles. Works from specifications, schedules, and general instructions requiring interpretation in various applications. Basic computer skills required. Reading (English), writing (English), and ability to utilize Computer to input work orders in the Computerized Maintenance Work Order System with minimal training within (60) days of employment required. One to three years experience. Trade school completion preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Employees must be at least 18 years of age to perform this role.
