The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team of over 380 employees providing essential water and sewer services for Durham’s 309,000+ residents. We deliver the Best Tasting Water in the state daily and ensure wastewater is carefully treated to protect the environment. We have vacancies in Lift Station Maintenance within our Vac Truck & ARV crews. These teams perform preventative and corrective cleaning to ensure the proper operation of sewer lift stations.

  • ARV (Air-Relief Valve) crew: Responsible for maintaining ARVs on sewer force mains to ensure proper functioning, which is essential for lift station performance.
  • Vac Truck crew: Responsible for cleaning and maintaining sewer lift stations, including vacuuming ARH manholes, confined space entry, traffic control, and ARV maintenance or replacement when needed.

Cross-training on sewage lift station operation will be provided for standby/recall duties and emergency response. This position also supports lift station maintenance and repairs when needed, working as a semi-skilled laborer alongside the Crew Leader and colleagues. The role requires interpersonal skills and professionalism, with the ability to step in for the Crew Leader as necessary.

Must be willing to work in all weather conditions and participate in rotational standby/recall duties.

  • Performs basic repairs under supervision, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, and welding; inspects facilities and reports issues; operates light equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains reports, logs, and inventories; assists in the shop; provides customer service and information on policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
  • Two years of maintenance experience related to the role
  • Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days if holding another state license
  • North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with HAZMAT or Tanker endorsement (not required at hire but must be obtained within 9 months)
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces with safety equipment, complying with all safety rules

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA Competent Person certification for excavation and confined space entry
  • Experience in municipal or water/sewer authority settings
