The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician III to join the Sign Shop section of the Transportation Division. This position works with a crew of three to five employees responsible for a variety of traffic marking and sign installation activities within the public right of way.
The Maintenance Technician III will be responsible for the following:
The successful candidate must have experience using Microsoft Excel and working with computers and iPads. The position requires knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and an intermediate work zone certification recognized by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential and have two to three years of experience working with traffic markings and signs.
A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Applicants who do not currently possess a Class B CDL must be able to obtain one within six months of employment.

Participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance, construction, and utilities activities. Performs skilled work in the operation or repair of several types of motorized equipment or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements. May require journey‑level license in an area of skilled trades. May be required to qualify for certification as a State Inspector.
